Marcia Maria

Amigo Branco by Marcia Maria is possibly my favorite Brazilian song ever. I first heard it in Stockholm circa 2002 when local DJ legend Mad Mats played it at Raw Fusion. I had to find out what it was right away, but locating the 12″ took me a while. The song was compiled on the first volume of the Via Brasil series, but those are long gone and I don’t think it’s currently available in any form. Pictured above is the Brazilian 45 from 1978.

My Solid Gold mix from 2005

Back in 2005 I did quick soul/disco mix for my good friend Pablo Steffa’s then brand new Solid Gold site. Somehow I had completely forgotten about it until another dude extraordinaire DJ Seppo Hova started blasting it at some hazy point early Sunday morning this past weekend. Kinda surprising considering there are some all time faves in there, including the single best boogie song ever, “Barely Breaking Even” by Leroy Burgess and the Universal Robot Band.

Listen/DL here!

Marcia Griffiths: Here I Am Baby
Lamont Dozier: Why Can’t We Be Lovers
The Trammps: Rubber Band (DJ Language Edit)
Jennifer Lara: I’m In Love
Donell Jones: U Know What’s Up
Majic Massey: I Got That
New York Port Authority: I Don’t Wanna Work Today
Ashford & Simpson: It Seems To Hang On
Brainstorm: Journey To The Light (Theo Parrish Ugly Edit)
Universal Robot Band: Barely Breaking Even

Scraper Bike!

I caught this on the Soulstrut board and it made my day. To quote my man Gnat, “thanks for reminding me why I love hip hop”.

New mix just in time for midsummer!

“A great many people get very drunk and happy. It is also an occasion when many people look for a relationship (often a rather short one).” That’s what Wikipedia says about midsummer in Finland and basically they got it right. Below you’ll find a brand new mix just in time for the festivities.

Local DJ legend K-K-K-K2 has a blog now. No music yet, but love for Casio watches and rants about Norton Antivirus. Check it out!

More mid 90’s heat

Listening to the old mix I posted before the weekend inspired me to transfer some 12″s from the era and these were the first three in line. Mytee G Poetic and Dutchmin are top notch indie 12″s from 1995, the Smif N Wessun track appeared on a bootleg whitelabel around 1996 or so. I don’t think it was ever officially released. The Beatminerz produced it and I remember reading an Evil Dee interview back then where he said only 3 people had access to the song and it still leaked. He sounded kinda bitter about it.

Mytee G. Poetic: Listen To The Lyrics
Smif N Wessun: Nothing Move But The Money
Dutchmin: Get Your Swerve On

Hip Hop Is Living 1996

Now I’ve been meaning to post this for a minute, but the summer just started and I’ve been too busy hanging out in the park to get it ripped. This was my second “official” mix and I always felt it was like a prequel to the better known Keeping Crates Stacked from 1997.

The tracklisting below is taken from the inside cover, but that’s nowhere near complete as the total length is 100+ minutes. Musically it’s a mix of 95/96 indie label stuff (some real gems in there) and early 90’s classics. The mixing is kinda smooth considering I used to do each side in a single take back then. There’s some cool blends too… Enjoy!

Side A:

Organized Konfusion: Bring It On
Artifacts: Wrong Side Of The Tracks
Constant Deviants: Competition Catch Speed Knots
The Dereliks: A Phrase That Pays
Hi-Tech: Book Of Life
Hi-Tech & J-Treds: Weak Minds
Da Great Deity Dah: Life Or Death
Natural Elements: Shine
Militant Mind State: Bottom Line
Lux & Tommy Hill: Street Playa
Niyabingy: Make It Hot
Dutchmin: Get Your Swerve On
Big Kwam: I Don’t Give A Whut Part 1

Side B:

KRS One: Hip Hop VS Rap
FIN Represent: P-Jay / C-Mo / Celes
Sic Sense: Positional Bypass
Tha Alkaholiks: Next Level
None: None Quite Like You
Nas-T Howie: Attic
K-Otic Fam: Composition
Jemini The Gifted One: Tribute
Black Sheep: To Whom It May Concern
Ed OG & Da Bulldogs: I Gotta Have It
Nice & Smooth: No Delayin
Organized Konfusion: Fudge Pudge
Percee P: Lung Collapsing Lyrics
Brand Nubian: Dedication

Kiitokset Kempulle joka teki kannen back in the day, DJ Kelloggsille joka lähetti mulle kuvan siitä ja Jussi V:lle joka jaksoi kopioida oman kasettinsa mulle ripattavaksi. Omaa mulla ei oo ollut kymmeneen vuoteen…

Just Blaze blog

The superstar producer has his own blog now where he talks about such universally important topics as cellphone technology, Google maps, Main Source demos (like we here) and his recent acquisition of the hiphopmusic.com domain.

Highly recommended.

Oh yeah, there’s a forum too.
