Classic Time #9

I was in the process of getting my shit together for the KPO trip (see below) when I saw this 12" I hadn't seen for a long time. It reminded me of some of the real house nights I used to go to and how I kinda miss them so I just had to go on and post it. As far as I'm concerned this is one of the best house songs ever.

A special shout out to Pirkka (www.mixoftheweek.com) for turning me on to this.

KPO Breaks

This Saturday I'll be at KPO Breaks, the biggest annual B-boy happening in Finland. I'll be playing at the main event as well as the afterparty. The event is always fun (if a bit sweaty) and the afterparty is always off the hook. The whole thing takes place in this town called Kuopio some 5 hours north from here. For those who've never been to B-Boy jam, below you'll find a perfect example of what it might sound like.
This tune was recorded in Italy and first appeared on the soundtrack to a sex comedy called Sessomatto, translated How Funny Can Sex Be? Soon after it was licensed by then brand new New York label West End, who released two extended disco mixes of it on the first 12" single they ever did. The long breaks and the Soul Makossa-inspired groove appealed to the hip hop DJ's and as they say the rest is history.

Suomi Soul #1

In 2004 I did a mix of soul songs taken from albums that used to be often overlooked here just because they were so common locally. Most of them were imported in bulk as so called cut outs when the U.S. distributor deleted the title and had to get rid of remaining stock. Stylistically the mix leans towards the mellower end of seventies soul with a few slightly discoey tracks towards the end. The reception was so good that I ended up doing a second part two years later. Volume 2 is still available on CD, here's the first installment for your downloading pleasure.

Basso Gaala

Damn, meitsi voitti DJ-palkinnon Basson äänestyksessä. Täytyy olla fiiliksissä, nimittäin yleinen taso on Helsingissä rehellisesti tosi kova. Iso kiitos kaikille joiden äänien ansiosta palkinto mulle suotiin.

Grandmaster Flash Live In Helsinki 1985

What we have here is exclusive audio of the very first hiphop act to visit Helsinki. According to one of the reviews famous live venue Vanha was sold out which means at least 800 people showed up. Grandmaster Flash had his mc's Kid Creole, Lavon, Mr Broadway and Rahiem with him (Melle Mel, Cowboy & Scorpio were gone by then) and between Flash's cuts they performed all the big hits from the Sugarhill era as well as current songs from the They Said It Couldn't Be Done album.

Classic Time #8

I can very clearly remember when I first heard this. It was a reggae night at a long defunct venue (Sodan alakerta for the locals) and I was like "dayymn this must be the best dancehall song ever made". Now I might have to reconsider that, but the intro alone still sends chills up my spine every single time I hear it. Not to mention the bassline that is just sick.

Watch My Feet

Great track by new artist out of Chicago. Check Trygic Myspace for more info. If anyone knows where to get this on vinyl please let me know.

Sen verran UG-räppifani joutuu olemaan että saa extrafiilikset joka kerta kun kuulee oikeesti timmin biisin artistilta josta ei oo kuullut koskaan aiemmin. Tää on malliesimerkki aiheesta. Jäbä on Chicagosta ja konemusansa tuntevat huomaa salettiin ghetto house-influenssin kertsissä. Täydellistä. Lisää infoa Myspacesta

Classic Time #7

Anyone who knows anything about the history of modern music knows about Salsoul. The label is responsible for more true classics than I care to count. One of my personal faves is Take Some Time Out (For Love) by the mighty Salsoul Orchestra. With Jocelyn Brown on vocals and Patrick Adams behind the boards how could it not be? Also I think I like the fact that it's slightly slower than many of the label's bigger hits.

Don't know about the kid? Well, google me.

Uus sinkku ja mun korvaan parasta Cam'ronia sitten Something Newn. Tää on todettu jo tuhanteen kertaan, mutta edelleen jäbän paras puoli ja miljoonasta muusta räppäristä erottava tekijä on huumori. Taas saa repeillä.

Wanna go live on the moon, can't hardly live down here

Ernie Hinesin "Our Generation" vuoden 1971 Electrified-albumilta on huippuhieno funkahtava soul-raita josta ei käsittääkseni ole mitään pätevää uudelleenjulkaisua. Yritin etsiä suhteellisen pienelle huomiolle jääneestä Stax-artistista lisää faktaa ja päädyin Ernien omille gospel-sivuille.

DJ Cheese / Helsinki 1986

DMC-maailmanmestari DJ Cheesen visiitti Helsinkiin lokakuussa 1986 oli yks ihan ekoista kansainvälisistä hiphop-tapahtumista rakkaassa kotikaupungissamme. Itse olin 10-vuotias joten en ollut tapahtumaa todistamassa, mutta Pimpun ennen julkaisemattomat fotot alla kertoo ajan meiningistä meille nuoremmille. Kuvat suurenee klikkaamalla.
