Classic Time #11

Beginning Of The End's tribute to the Bahamas, Funky Nassau, was one of the ultimate 70's crossover funk hits. After two albums with the group lead vocalist Ray Munnings went solo and recorded two singles for U.K.'s Tammi label. One of them is an incredible remake of Funky Nassau. The track's been comped once by Norman Jay, but to this day there's no real reissue of it. I got mine back in the day from Stockholm's famous Snickars Records for what seemed like a lot back then, but really wasn't.

Late 80's Rap

Now I was planning to post an ancient mix I did back in 1996, but couldn't get the tape ripped yet so I decided to post my late 80's rap mix from last fall instead. The CD's are almost gone anyway. The mix has some 25 tracks on it including a few turntable remixes I did myself. Some of the songs are common, some rare, all were chosen because I felt they deserved wider recognition. Enjoy...

Btw, if anyone wants a CD with full cover artwork get at me ASAP.

Give Da DJ A Break

Back in mid to late 90's I used to buy just about every party record AV8, Nervous and Nubian Crackers put out. At one point I did long sets of nothing but party breaks. Obviously that got tired real quick, but after 10 years I still enjoy playing some of them. Below you'll find a few big AV8's, all from 1996. A few people here call the DJ Eclipse joint "The Worldwide Song", named after a club night we used to do. It was played every single time for years and years.

Crooklyn Clan: Juice+Gin

3 X G Rap

Kool G Rap is a legend in his own right. He'll be in town in June and even if I generally don't feel like seeing most of the 90's stars touring Europe I just might go and see him. Here are 3 of my favorite G Rap classics. Of all the X rated raps ever recorded I honestly think Talk Like Sex still takes the cake.

Kool G Rap & DJ Polo: Talk Like Sex
Kool G Rap & DJ Polo featuring Large Professor, Freddie Foxxx & Anton: Money In The Bank
Kool G Rap featuring Nas: Fast Life (Norfside Mix)

All you aspiring remix dudes need to check this if you haven't yet.

2 Edits

Here's two edits I did this morning. Both songs are from the mid 80's and although somewhat obscure they still have that classy club R&B sound of the era. You just gotta love it.
Shout outs to my man Soul-Sami who hooked me up with both of these.

Kee: You Turn Me Out (Anonymous Edit)

And yes here's another one for your collection. You might know B.O.B. as the dude who did Haterz Everywhere (featuring Wes Fif) a few months back. Just some remixes

Someone at Soulstrut requested the D&D Allstars Remix, I promised to find it and here it finally is for all to enjoy. Classic whitelabel biz from the mid 90's, How High is on the flipside. They both use multiple beats from the artists' earlier hits.

Classic Time #10

In 1976 Low Down reached the Top 5 on the club play, black, disco and pop charts. The intro break made it a hip hop classic. In 2007 it sounds fresh as ever.

Main Source

The search for unreleased tracks and alternate takes can be real record nerdery at times, but in my world Main Source's debut album Breaking Atoms is up there with the Criminal Mindeds, Illmatics and Ready To Dies so I'm thankful someone unearthed these two gems. P-Vine put them on a Japan-only 12" some time last year, they dried up real quick but I was lucky enough to catch one in Tokyo last fall.

Main Source: Looking At The Front Door (Uncut)
Main Source: Time (Unreleased, supposedly from the Breaking Atoms sessions)
