The weekend was hectic to say the least. Friday at Redrum set it off right, it was supposed to be an R&B night but we ended playing classic disco, funk, whatever. Shout outs to Jaako and the Top Rocks crew. Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul: I've Got So Much Trouble On My Mind
Saturday I took a flight to Stockholm and played Trädgården there with my man Stefski. Our room was off the hook from the minute they opened the doors. Everything from bay rap to dancehall to club music was played and naturally I had to throw in some of my own things as well. DJ Anonymous: Name Brand Party Break
Sunday night back in HKI I just had to check out the weekly reggae night at Redrum (again). The place was packed and the music was top notch. I was running back and forth to the booth trainspotting 45s, here's a real hot song I had saved on my cell. Big up Komposti. Tony Rebel: The Herb
Turf Talk Fan Club European chapter recommends: In The Street A slapper if I ever heard one. And I don't even like Queen. The track's from the recent I Love The Bay compilation on Too Short's Up All Nite label.
Ai nii, kuuliks kaikki jo huhut: Too Short Helsingissä syksyllä.
New wave covers of soul classics.. you gotta love em! The Flying Lizards and The Slits are old faves, but the Paul Haig and Ronny versions I only found out about recently. This post was inspired by last nights corporate gig where "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" just killed it.
My apologies for not updating for a while, I've been busy with all kinds of different things. Deejaying of course, but also the final 9 Sopranos episodes.
Anyway, here's some ancient hip hop journalism for my Finnish speaking peoples. This article was published in 1984 in the leading teen magazine Suosikki and is more or less based on Steven Hager's book Hip Hop. Shout outs to Pimpu for the scans (click to enlarge).
As a bonus, here's one my faves from the disco-rap era, "Get The Party Jumpin" by Solo Sound.
Remixes all over the place, but useful ones you don't hear every day. Here's two uptempo rap blends I really like, courtesy of my man Herm in Arizona. Enjoy!
The Federation: Go Dumb (Herm's Disco Dummy Mix)
Messy Marv: Get On My Hype (Herm's Disco Sideshow Mix)
While Greedy G by Studio One house band Brentford Allstars is a stone cold classic and well familiar outside of the reggae scene the two others are slightly more obscure. High Times is off the Tribesman Assault album on Wackies and is still somewhat unknown despite having some of the heaviest drums ever recorded. I first heard it played by my man DJ Didier (Koneisto 2001!) and needless to say I was in the booth trainspotting before the intro break was finished. Herb Man Dub remained unreleased until 1999 but has been a favorite ever since.
New York's Konk had a bunch of 12"s on famous labels such as 4th & Broadway and Sleeping Bag, put their only ever full length release "Yo" appeared in 1983 on the Belgian Les Disques Du Crépuscule label. Album opener Baby Dee is the absolute highlight and is in my book up there with the biggest classics of the No Wave/Post Punk era.
This song recorded in 1984 by Chicago's Carver High School students blows my mind every time. The production is top notch and the dialogue even better.
The promo issue of The J.B.'s classic Damn Right I'm Somebody album (1974) comes with a song that to this day hasn't been released to the public. It's basically an instrumental version of Love And Happiness with James himself sending shout outs to radio jocks that had helped him on his way to the top. He also proclaims that to him "happiness is Fred Wesley playing his horn, playing his heart out, and saying "Hey brother, it's all for free!" ". Now how surprising is that?
The final fifth season of TV's best show The Wire seems to be confirmed for spring 2008. It's going to be hard to wait until then and I've already spent too much time on YouTube revisiting classic scenes. Here's the legendary Bunk & McNulty crime scene scene where they create a whole new language of their own, after you've watched it check out The Wire F*cking Fan Club's short piece about it.
I just noticed I have full 100 posts on this here thing, actually 105 already. Inititally I thought of posting 100 songs to celebrate it, but soon realized the ridiculous amount of time it would take. Therefore, in my attempt to say thank you to all of ya'll, here's 10 disco & boogie classics you need in your life.
I've been meaning to do this for a while, but Dude N'em's banging Watch My Feet finally inspired me to work on my Chicago juke collection. Now I got a bunch of new tracks and here are a few choice cuts by some of the scene's biggest names. The first two are slightly older (2005 & 2003), the second two are recent. Make shure to check the Myspace links as well, especially Rashad's as he's got bangin Can't Tell Me Nothing and Get It Shawty remixes up there. If you missed it in January you might also wanna check Nick Catchdub's juke article on the Fader blog.
Vancouver's DJ U-Tern, the man responsible for the killer Marvin Gaye remix featured on my Midsummer mix, just posted a 100 minute Prince mix on his Onedaylater blog. "Unreleased tracks, demos, alternate versions, related songs and the HITS!". What could possibly be better than that? That's right, NOTHING, so go get it!
