Classic Time #19

Those Guys: Tonite (1991)

Those Guys went on to greater house fame later as The Basement Boys. This early production is one monster of a song, clocking in at 11:14. Towards the end they even slow it down and speed it back up French Kiss style.
Once again I'll have to shout out my man DJ Pirkka who first played me this back in 1998 or so.

Toto "Georgy Porgy" Live in 1979

Too bad Cheryl Lynn- who sings the chorus on the record- is not onstage with them.

I Love Minnie

She was just perfect and died way too young in 1979, at just 31 years of age. I usually don't even read Youtube comments & responses, but I can definitely respect Babybear62 dropping knowledge here:

"Minnie is the only singer 2 reach beyond 5 octave vocal range. In the song "Reasons" she holds a crescendo scale up to 6th & 7th octave range & ends up two octaves above the staff. Mariah Carey cannot do this. Mariah Carey can only hold five octave. Minnie goes 7th octave. In 1999, Mariah's album "Rainbow", Mariah "mimicked" Minnie's song "Bliss" on the 3rd track of the album. Carey can be heard singing the phrase "On and On" similar to Minnie Rippleton's style but not as good as Minnie"

And here's 3 slightly less known but still very much essential Minnie moments for your enjoyment...

Minnie Ripperton: Here We Go (1980)
Minnie Ripperton: Memory Lane (1979)
Minnie Ripperton: Reasons (1974)

2 x S.O.U.L.

S.O.U.L.. Burning Spear (7" Version)
S.O.U.L.: Peace Of Mind
Burning Spear might very well be my all time favorite funk 45 (wait until you hear the cue burn... just ignore it) and Peace Of Mind is one of those great vocal funk tunes with a message as relevant today as back in 1972 when it was recorded.

Disco Request

Mary Clark: Take Me I'm Yours
Top Cat & Mary Clark: Disco Request (Noisy Bunch Remix)

The Disco Request Remix has been one of my secret weapons ever since it's release a few years back. Seems like it works no matter where you drop it. Mary Clark is the disco record they used for the beat: a semi-obscure, extra-funky Patrick Adams production from 1980. If you enjoyed the remix check out the Noisy Bunch Myspace, they got a cool Mr Oizo remix up there.

New Project Pat

"The number one ringtone..." I don't know about that, but the chorus is certainly something you can sing along to every now and then. The beat is hot too.

Classic Riddim #1: Bookshelf

A dancehall staple since it's release in 1998, Tony "CD" Kelly's Bookshelf just might be my all time favorite riddim. I definitely wouldn't be mad at hearing more hip hop & club deejays play it as well.

Wayne Wonder: Watching You
Sean Paul: Deport Them
Sasha: Dat Sexy Body
Tanto Metro & DaVonte: Say Wooee
Beenie Man: Bookshelf

EDIT: Broken links fixed and one more song added.
Big up: Street Hawk aka DJ Pirkka, Komposti Sound, Stefski in STHLM.

Keeping Crates Stacked 1997

What we have here is a rap mix I did back in 1997, kind of a sequel to Hip Hop Is Living from the year before. The mix was very popular locally and also got some international exposure through O Dub's (Soulsides) old site. He gave me a nice review and even sold some copies inbetween hustling cassette dubs of the Hiero-Hobo battle.

Keeping Crates Stacked features a bunch of then brand new indie 12"s, a few older joints, some cool blends and a couple of freestyles by local rappers. You'll find the (very much incomplete) tracklisting and dl links below.... Enjoy!

Alleys Of Your Mind

Detroit's Cybotron is best known for their seminal electro masterpiece Clear (Missy's Lose Control beat for the youngins in here), but even before that they created this bangin little electro-funk 45 that is today considered to be the second ever techno record, released only weeks after Number Of Names' Sharevari.

Classic Time #16

This 1992 hit came in a multitude of cool versions. The famous original Human Nature version still rocks, but what takes the cake is the promo-only Human Nature Duet Mix that has the girls trading lines with Jacko himself.
