My Crown

I've had people I respect tell me I'm crazy for saying this is the best 12" Rawkus ever put out... Well, I thought so back when it came out and now, 11 years later, still do.

Devin show this Friday!

The long-awaited Devin The Dude show is finally happening tomorrow Friday @ Tavastia, up on stage with him will be Houston's mixtape mechanic DJ Rapid Ric. Me and my man DJ Tipa will be doing warm-up. The event will be sold out, so get your tickets in advance. There's also rumours of an after hours party in a secret location with Rapid Ric behind the decks, so watch out.

Btw, while Saturday's Baby Cham / Pinchers show comes highly recommended there's also an interesting invite-only event happening somewhere in Kallio. Behind the decks DJ Pirkka, ODJ TG, ODJ Harri as well as yours truly, playing mostly older house sounds. This is from 9 until 2, holler at me via email for invites.

Smoothe Da Hustler & Trigga Da Gambler: Broken Language (1995)
I got the sudden urge to post this before the winter is over. I just came to think of the fact that while some of us take tracks like this for granted there must also be people who never heard it. To those I can only say that to this day it's one of the sickest duets ever recorded.

BONUS:
Special Ed: Neva Go Back (1995)
Another red cover Profile 12" from the same era that I just happened to pull out. While Broken Language has been a certified classic since day one I always felt this was somewhat underrated.

Just when you thought it was safe in the club...

The anticipated second remix album by my fellow HKI deejay dudersons Top Billin will be finally out next week. This time the EP includes a bunch of outside productions, among them Work It by The Rub's world famous DJ Ayres and a new jack swing club remix called Nothing But A Party by yours truly.
For your enjoyment:

DJ Ayres: Work It
Top Billin: Do You Wanna Party
DJ Anonymous: Nothing But A Party

Note: the above three tracks are ipod quality at 128kbps. If you gonna play them out do everyone a favor and go get the record when they drop it. If you're a professional DJ and live in a far away place not serviced by real record stores such as this and this drop me a line and I just might hook you up with some 320's.
You can also hit Mr Nenis on their myspace.

Be Thankful For What You Got

DJ Kool's go-go take on William DeVaughn's timeless classic was a bit of a DJ fave here when it came out and damn if it didn't still sound good when I played it again the other day.

What U Saying

So I'm back on my vinyl ripping game after some technical re-arrangements and that means more random older things will be posted here as well.

Money Boss Players: What U Saying (1994)
The best song from the mythical Ghetto Chronicle Daily album. Sound quality is so so, but until someone remasters the damn thing that's all we got.

BONUS:
Lort Tariq, Jay-Z & Nas: Analyze This
Another MBP related gem and the only song before Black Republican where Jigga and Nas appear side by side. The song is originally from 96/97, supposedly produced by Pete Rock. And if anyone cares, Nas murders Jay.

Osunlade My Reflection

Osunlade: My Reflection
Now this is no news to anyone staying on top of the deep house game, but I missed it as did many others. And it's definitely good enough to deserve a little crossover attention as well. The guitar line is extra catchy, if you don't believe me just ask Lil Mama, T-Pain & Chris Brown.

In HKI we love us some Dance Mania

Me I'm a relative newcomer to the wonderful world of ghetto house, but in the house & techno scenes Dance Mania always had a following here. A perfect example is Toni Aalto's Bikini Team U.S.A. mix from 2003: strictly Dance Mania all the way, with all the big names included together with some lesser known players.
As far as I'm concerned this is an essential piece of local DJ history right here.

Instrumental Peg

Mike Mandel: Peg (1977)(Community Service Edit)

One of 2007's coolest disco edit releases was this little EP that supposedly originated somewhere in New York. The highlight for me is the very useful edit of Mike Mandel's Steely Dan cover that in it's original form is too much all over the place to really play out.
If you never heard of Mandel before he played synthesizer and keyboards with jazz-rock dudes like Larry Coryell and was later in disco-jazz supergroup Players Association.

Grown Man On

Dem Hoodstarz: Grown Man On (2005)
Grown Man On Remix feat Mistah F.A.B., Clyde Carson, Turf Talk & San Quinn (2006)
These have been my jams ever since they came out, I even had the remix on one of my summer mixes back in '06. For a while I didn't play either version, but this year I'm planning to bring them back. What can I say, the Traxxxamillion beat is still bananas and the topic is as important as ever.

Wicked Funk

Weird early-90's 12" by a bunch of sample-happy Italians. The song's a classic in the Balearic scene, but sounds like straight up hip hop to me.

Edit: DL link updated, the initial one seems to have been converted to 128 by Drop.Io. It's 320 like it's supposed to be now.

Saturday Morning Music

I was drinking my morning coffee and casually looking for a few more songs to add the mix I'm doing for 100 Limousines when I came across this old fave. I didn't want to put it on the mix as it forever reminds me of Matthew Africa & B.Cause's excellent Soul Boulders, but had to share it with you as it's more or less the ultimate Saturday morning song, at least here in my private mind garden.

Classic Time #33

Strobelite Honey (Maybe We Did Mix / the video version) 1992
Strobelite Honey (Yes We Did Mix / remixed by David Morales) 1992

Ever since Choice Is Yours was played to death ten years ago Strobelite Honey has been the one Black Sheep joint to pull out, for me at least. I always liked a good uptempo party rap jam and back then there definitely wasn't too many of those.
The video version was usually my choice, but occasionally I've gone for the house version as well.
There's another Morales house remix on a different 12", I haven't seen my copy for a minute though. If anyone has a quality rip of the 8 minute "Def Mix" please hook me up.

What 'Em Doing Is My Business

What 'Em Doing Is My Business is a great little disco funk jam from late-70s' Atlanta. It's also one of the most requsted numbers from my DTGDT #2 mix. I really really love the vocals, Gregory comes across as the dude you definitely don't want to mess with.

Steady G: Rainy Dayz (1997)

BONUS:
My favorite party break of 2007, if you missed it first time around you'll still find it useful as Paper Planes is not going anywhere anytime soon (the remix single is finally out in a few weeks)
DJ B Cause: Annie Lennox Paper Planes

Classic Time #32

There's not much I can say about this track that hasn't been said before so I'll just say it sounds as fresh today as the day I first heard it. The link below is the 12" version, which as far as I can tell is identical to the album version but with better sound quality.

For whatever reason I've been on a real Gainsbourg kick today. Maybe it's the recent Les Années Psychédéliques comp I've had on repeat for a while. If I

Rubbabandz

This used to be the shit back in 95 and to this day I think it's one of the best from the era. Also, I always thought the song has a real winter vibe to it so it's perfect to be posted now. Just a few music blogs you should check out... not a comprehensive list by any means.

Musicmustgobeyonditself
Brand new HKI blog by three of the scene's most active DJ's. The name puzzles me, the content looks promising.
Mike B VS Dickie G
An educational mix of house and hip hop, with some of the most entertaining write-ups.
Beer And Rap
A little slow at times, still one of the top hip hop blogs. The Bass post is seriously off the hook.
100 Limousines
Got a make over recently and is looking stylish as hell now. No rips, but quality mixes for days. My favorite soul & disco blog, bar none.
Outside Broadcast
Now with Johnny Cocco on board Outside Broadcast seems to be moving twice as fast. Best overall selection of dance music anywhere.

Another HKI blog by local DJ legend K2. Quality vinyl rips across the board.
