Hey Young World
Just testing MTV's new music video search. I'm defintely not mad. The quality's real good and the selection's not bad either.
Lubrication

It seems like many of us who grew up with mid-90's rap still have a place in our hearts for Kwest The Madd Ladd's very entertaining 101 Things. I always thought dude's debut single from the year before is just as good.

Blow Your Head
Eli's remix of Diplo's Blow Your Head, you know the song with the big JB's synth. Courtesy of Mad Decent.
On a related note, check Diplo's take on DJ Mujava's Township Funk as well. Looking forward to the full remix set, I doubt none will match the incredible original though.

What is your preferred bitrate?
I've been wondering about this for a while. Whether you're a regular or just passing by, please take a second to answer. You'll see the results after voting.

Easiest Way To Fall
Freda Payne: Easiest Way To Fall (Anonymous Bonus Beats Edit)
Btw,
how dope is it that JVC took the beat AND the guitar from the same album?
Mos Def, Jay, Prince & Stevie / Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin & Biggie
Damn, I used to play this a lot at one point. Now it's been a while and it's sounding fresh as ever again.
Q-TIp: Let's Ride (1999)
(click to preview or righ click save as to DL)
Btw, make sure to check the new jam and the somewhat bangerific Swizz Beats remix if you haven't yet.
Also, a request: if anyone has a high bitrate version of the ancient unreleased ATCQ jam Mr Incognito I'd really appreciate it. My old bootleg 12"'s too damn beat up to rip.

Why?

Why? (Instrumental)(1982)
A few of my friends have called me crazy for preferring the instrumental version on this. Whatever, I always thought it's Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers who really steal the show here. Either way, it's a classic jam, no doubt about that.

Heavenly Break

As simple as it is I think this is one of the very few timeless new things I found on the blogs ever. I kinda forgot about it too, until B.Cause played it last Saturday. Eli originally posted this in August '07, but the link is still up so here we go.
Ok so that Zshare wasn't co-operating, here's a re-up.

Los Masters

Los Masters: Cissy Strut (1969)
One of the best versions of the funk standard, from an unexpected place like Chile too.
X-Amount Of Verses, With or Without Curses

Mytee G Poetic: Com'n Wit Nuff Ruffness (1995)
A killer track from the first wave of mid-90's indies. Dude's flow is dope and the production is tight as well. The flipside is just as good and can still be grabbed here.

Now We Gots 2 Bump
Back in '03 I just happened to pick up the first EP from a then brand new London label. The house tracks were alright, but this is what I ended up playing all year long. I was really feeling the simple Mizell loop, I finally got it ripped and it's right back in rotation.
Solid Groove: Now We Gots 2 Bump (2003)
!!!The link is fixed now.

As many of you know Dubsided went on to be a respected label and put out club standard A Bit Patchy among other things. The Nadastrom EP will be out any day now, Neoteric & U-Tern are signed and a few of my HKI peoples have been in talks with the label as well. Big things.

Give It To Me Baby Update

A local DJ friend requested this very entertaining edit a looong time ago and here it finally is. I'm going to see Charlie Murphy tonite and I guess that kind of inspired me to post this as well.

You Showed Me

"The 1989 debut album by hip-hop combo De La Soul featured an uncredited sample from the Turtles (specifically, the intro to "You Showed Me"(1968)), in the song "Transmitting Live from Mars". Kaylan and Volman sued, winning a large settlement, setting a legal precedent, and causing the music industry to begin carefully crediting (and paying royalties for) sampled works on future rap and other recordings. As they explained, "We don't hate sampling; we like sampling. If we don't get credit, we sue, and all that stuff (a share of the royalties, plus punitive damages) comes back to us!""

Way Down In The Hole
The coolest thing I've learned today is that Blaq Starr and M.I.A. have recorded a cover of Way Down In The Hole. Now it might suck and it might not, either way I can not wait.

Sweet Stuff

As you can see I've been on a little LP ripping spree lately. This one is for my Dilla fans and basically everyone who enjoys a dope little groove with some sensuous vocals.
Sylvia: Sweet Stuff (1976)
BONUS:
One of the writers of Sweet Stuff, Harry Ray of The Moments (and later Ray, Goodman & Brown) recycled the rhythm track on one of his own songs some 6 years later. Definitely not bad either.

Say what? Got a boyfriend?
King Errisson: Well, Have A Nice Day (1977)
A sophisticated piece of disco funk with latin touches and a classic old school break if there ever was one. I always really liked the vocals and the lyrics include some pretty memorable lines too.

On And On Tracs
Jesse Saunders' On & On, claimed by many to be the first house track ever, came about when Saunders lost a megamix record he liked to use for his DJ sets. He already had production experience and a few electro / new wave releases under his belt, so he solved the problem by creating his own version of the megamix, over self-programmed drum machine beats. The result was On & On, released on Jes Say Records in early 1984.
Jesse Saunders: On And On Tracs - 119 / 5A / 1A / 4 A&B / I'm The DJ (1984)
I'm not going to post the full song, as it's widely available for purchase and you should do just that, but what we do have here is the set of five 3 minute 808 grooves he pressed on the b-side of the 12". They are the exact grooves from On & On and some of his earlier records like "I'm The DJ". The above link has all 15 minutes of them, ripped from the Jes Say 12" and edited together for continous play by yours truly, with cue points and everything for your convenience. Enjoy.
Btw, here's a good read on the origins of the record and Jesse's take on the mid-80's Chicago scene, taken from Jonathan Fleming's 1994 book What Kind Of House Party Is This?

Fool's Gold Remixes

As you might have noticed I'm really feeling the recent Fool's Gold output and the remix comp especially. I'd have to say these 3 are my favorite tracks from it.
A-Trak: Say Whoa (DJ Spinna Remix)
Kid Sister: Pro Nails (Rusko Remix)
Treasure Fingers: Cross The Dancefloor (Chromeo Remix)
Make sure to check out the CD release tour too if you're in the area. The rest of the tracks you can grab over at Iheartcomix.
Juicy Fruit

FIle taken down due to bad sound quality. Will re-up at some point.
Christine's smooth lovers rock rendition of the Mtume classic, produced by Chosen Few of Trojan and Konduko fame. She delivers the song convincingly and whoever mixed the song makes a point of dubbing out the "i'll be your lollipop, you can lick me everywhere"-line.

Skitch & Stuff
Just messing around with Skitch. That's the first half of my 4 hour radio show this past Saturday. I felt like a real Fool's Gold fan boy after playing 6 songs from them. What can I say, they're steady putting out good stuff right now. Shout outs to my main man Nick. Also shout outs to Sammy Bananas who played a dope set at 6. Linja later that night. Here's some footage from the last minutes before the lights went on, dude definitely knows what to play to keep my HKI peoples on the floor. Btw, check out the Braids & Fades EP out now.

Sorry for that, my international readers. It's just a link to a particularly discoey recent house song and a related local joke.
Anyway, check it out, it's a good song.
Have a good weekend everybody!

Hi, This Is Carol Williams

Carol Williams: Can't Get Away (From Your Love) Special Club Dub Mix
Some more disco nerdery before we move on. After a few months of club and radio play Carol Williams' 1982 New York hit Can't Get Away (From Your Love) was given a special dub mix by Vanguard's in-house DJ Ray "Pinky" Velasquez . Carol herself added the famous spoken word intro, the remix was pressed on one-sided 10" vinyl and sent out to A-list Tri-State DJ's as an appreciation of their support. All in all, it's one of the coolest special mixes from the era and has been bootlegged once or twice too.

Into The Milky Way

Jimmy Briscoe & The Beavers: Into The Milky Way 8:08 Version (1979)
In anticipation of this Friday's Solid Gold, here's ex-harmony group Jimmy Briscoe & The Little Beavers' big intergalactic disco record. 8 minutes of orchestral, atmospheric perfection, with a really cool breakdown halfway through as well. For whatever reason this is one of the harder Salsoul 12"s to find too.
