Now You Want Me

A little something for the weekend! Massive Romanthony dub from 1993, I've been requested this repeatedly since I made a little remix/edit of it a few years back. This is the original version and it's more or less the best thing I've ever heard.

Recommended Reading

I can't recall what I was searching for when I stumbled on writer/critic Carol Cooper's (Village Voice, Rolling Stone etc) homepage. Doesn't matter, really. If you're interested in solid contemporary writing on artists we all know & love you should pay her a visit as well.
I particularly enjoyed her pieces on Emerald, Sapphire & Gold (ESG), August Darnell and of course Prince.

Edit: oh yeah.... I stumbled there trying to find Gichy Dan dude's real name. Therefore:

Handling Things

Sorry for my absence folks, I was in China for a while for work and like so many other sites Blogspot is blocked there too.

Now let's play some rap. This is one good song and the first time Freddie Foxx ever appeared on wax.

New Edit

Stretched instrumental take on Clausel's early 80's soul jammy. The production is pretty damn slick.

And an older one I've been requested repeatedly. Long live Petrus and Malavasi!

Random 70's Jams For The Holidays

Yeah you guessed it, I've been ripping albums again. Here's a few choice cuts.

Time Is Passing (1977)
Dedicated to all those who were heavy into the School Of Hard Knocks like I was

Wandering (1976)
Classic Jamaican soul sounds recorded in Miami, produced by the legendary King Sporty who went on to produce 80's electronic masterpieces Haven't Been Funked Enough and Get Down among other things

Mother Earth (1974)
Beautiful mellow song from the album best known for Jay-Z's Friend Or Foe loop

Flower Dance (1976)
Tasty French library jam that was used repeatedly by Swedish producers back in the late 90's

Give It Up (1975)
Bangin' cover of the Kool & The Gang classic, only ever released in Sweden (and bootlegged in the UK later)

Evolution (1974)
Just a dope funk song with unintentionally funny lyrics

Who wouldn't love nutty xmas rhymes? If I wasn't playing a disco party I'd definitely play some of these tonight.

Hard Cell Xmas: My Christmas Bells (1987)
Pretty cool cover of Rock The Bells from the B-Boy Records comp pictured above

Treacherous Three: Xmas Rap (1984)
One of the highlights of Beat Street

Whistle: Santa Is A B-Boy (1986)
Just found the video for Just Buggin... crazy!

Nuit Et Jour

Earlier today I was wondering who came up with the nutty idea to do a French version of Nite And Day. I tweeted the question and got so many requests for the song I just had to post it here. For the record, as much as I love the original I think this is kind of corny.

Al B Sure!: Nuit Et Jour (1988)

Some of you might remember there's also a Spanish version on the album.

Classic Time #50

JoJo (1980)
So smooth. You know it's a real party when you can drop this in the middle of the night.

BONUS:
Lowdown (1976)
Another big classic by Boz. I always loved the story of Grand Wizard Theodore just accidentally inventing scratching while cueing the break on this when his mother knocked on the door.

Top Ten 12"s - November 2009

I picked up the old habit of buying new release 12"s again this year. I really enjoy playing them too (unless I have to haul them halfway across the world). And as much as I like the SL3, leaving the house without the laptop is a lot more fun.

Anyway, here's something I didn't think I'd get to do again a few years ago: a top 10 list of current 12" releases. From disco to house to techno there's a little bit of everything, some are brand new and some have been in heavy rotation for a while now. As far as I know all of them are available in the usual digital stores as well.

Produced by Greg Carmichael, of course.

Canadian Rapps

Saukrates: Rollin Remix feat Masta Ace & OC (1997)

I've been reminiscing about old Canadian undergound rap faves on this trip a lot. Of course I have almost none here with me now, but that's what YouTube's for. Shout outs to Neoteric, Skratch Bastid, Smalltown Pete, The Gaff and Jason Palma @ Play De Record.

Greetings from Canada

Sorry for the lack of posts folks... we've been busy touring and having a great time. We'll still do Shine in Vancouver on Thursday and Hi-Fi in Calgary on Saturday and then it's a wrap, drop by if you're in the area.

Btw, Finland homie and house music veteran Jori Hulkkonen just dropped an album on Turbo (also from Canada)... check it out!. This video is pretty damn cool as well.

Outstanding

Some obscure raps for a change.
Stonesthrow reissued the other song from this Connecticut 12" a few years back, I always preferred this one. Bangin beat, solid raps, Gap Band chorus and wack mc chants towards the end... can't go wrong.
TooTskee & Czar MC: Outstanding (1989)

BONUS:
NJ 12" from one year later, produced by Tony D (RIP) and also borrowing heavily from Outstanding.
