Recommended Reading

I can't recall what I was searching for when I stumbled on writer/critic Carol Cooper's (Village Voice, Rolling Stone etc) homepage. Doesn't matter, really. If you're interested in solid contemporary writing on artists we all know & love you should pay her a visit as well.
I particularly enjoyed her pieces on Emerald, Sapphire & Gold (ESG), August Darnell and of course Prince.

Edit: oh yeah.... I stumbled there trying to find Gichy Dan dude's real name. Therefore:

Country Trip Revisited

Last week I stumbled on an old mix by a hometown DJ hero, Pirkka. Semi-retired now, he was always one of the very few DJ's worth trainspotting each and every time and a direct source of inspiration to me and so many others.

The mix was first published on his seminal mix site Mixoftheweek.com and is a prime example of what he was known for: classy dance music old and new and regular, sometimes weekly one take, no edit mixes. Seven years later I had this on repeat for days and days and just had to share it here as well.

DJ Pirkka: Country Trip (2002)

Attitude: Love Me Tonight (RFC / Atlantic 12")
Chez Damier: ? (KMS 12")
Ron Allen: Whispers (Centrifuge 12")
Atmosfear: What Do We Do [Club Mix] (Elite 12")
G-Litter: Paiste [Mika Snickars edit] (Lifesaver 12")
Giorgio Moroder: Evolution (Casablanca LP)
Bjørn Torske: Hard Trafikk (Tellé 10")
Idjut Boys: Jazz Fook (U Star 12")
Roy Davis: Heart Attack (Power Music 12")
A Certain Ratio: Knife Slits Water (Soul Jazz LP)
Theo Parrish: You Forgot (Sound Signature 12")

Shout outs to everyone who came to Dance Right last night. I had a brief but very enjoyable time behind the decks.

During my set someone asked about the version of Peaches And Prunes I played. I couldn't recall the details there, but here it is, a really cool take on the timeless Ron Hardy classic. Enjoy.

The Naturals

I have a weak spot for cool disco sleeves and as far as I'm concerned some of the coolest ones are Jamaican. This here is a prime example. The song is not really reggae or dancehall, though, but 80's R&B with a cool synth / drum machine groove. This here is the instrumental side which I always preferred over the vocal.

Midsummer Party Mix #3

Damn I can't believe I made it and in time for the festivities too. Life's been hectic but here it is, the annual Midsummer Party Mix in all of it's 106 minute glory. Musically this is on the disco side of things and features a bunch of songs I've been playing A LOT over the last couple of months. No quickmixing this time (except for the short Imagination doubles), mostly I just let the songs ride all the way.

My Scandinavian brethren, have a good time next weekend and be safe. The rest of you can enjoy this all summer...

With 1 and a 1/2 Pair Of Pants You Ain't Cool

Boogie Down Productions: Love's Gonna Get'cha 1990
I always thought of this as one of Kris' finest moments. The beat is by the one & only Joseph Longo aka Pal Joey, who also produced early-90's BDP jams like Duck Down and Black Cop. Actually, I think I first remember his name from the Edutainment liner notes, way before I knew a thing about his house music career (producing timeless jams like Dance and Hot Music in addition to running his own Loop'D Loop label.)

BONUS:

Jocelyn Brown: Love's Gonna Get You (8:38 Dance Mix) 1985
Another solid classic by one the biggest voices in disco, produced by Jellybean. Sadly most seem to only remember the samples taken from it. In addition to the BDP above the acapella provided hooks for Chill Rob G's Power, Moby's Go and Bizarre Inc's I'm Gonna Get You. If some of you still want to take a stab at it leave feedback and I just might upload it.

Robert Palmer

So I'm in Tokyo and have a few off days between deejaying obligations. It's the rainy season so I believe I'll be staying in my hotel room a lot, working and possibly even blogging. Let's see.
I just got back from Hiyoko Records in Shimokitazawa and their Compass Point section sent me on a crazy Robert Palmer YT spree. Dude had a knack for choosing songs to cover. Wikipedia has a cool story on how his version of You're In My System came about:
""You Are In My System" was an example of Palmer's passion for R&B covers. He jammed the song onto the Pride album after the other tracks were finished. Hearing the track in a Paris club, Palmer rushed back to his Bahamas hometown, where the reconvened band (co-composer David Frank of The System included) put together the number."
Make sure to also check his version of Cherrelle's I Didn't Mean To Turn You On, a big hit in the early days of MTV.

2 Years of DJ's Delight

I just realized I started this little hobby of mine exactly 2 years ago today, with pretty boring posts on Atmosfear, Sade and local producers. It took one week and a post on an ancient mix of mine to generate any traffic, though.

I want to thank all of my regular visitors and subscribers for hanging on so long. This has been a lot of fun, taught me a lot about music and opened some doors too so let's keep it going.

Two celebrate these 2 years, here's 2 versions of my favorite weird old school classic. Area Code 615's harmonica jam from 1970 is pretty well known, but the mid-80's Italian bootleg remix incorporating the You'll Like It Too break is kind of obscure I guess. As weird as the groove is, it seems it always appealed to a lot of different DJ's, maybe it's time someone recycled it again.

Extended Infusion

Club House: Infusion (DJ Anonymous Edit) 320 and AIFF
Club House's catchy, very much Chic-influenced Infusion is sweet but just a bit too short in it's original form. You already know what I had to do.

Breakwater: No Limit (12" Mix)(1978)
I always loved the jam and it's classy production, but never noticed the writers are Grey & Hanks of RCA Disco fame, until just now. Weird, man, weird. Anyways... the 12" mix of this is what you wanna have as it's longer and features a cool extension of the breakdown in the middle.
My ol' head Philly peoples (Toney B & Cosmo what's up!!) always talk about the flipside (Do It Til The Fluid Gets Hot ) being a local classic, but I never got the chance to hear it out in a club there. One day man, one day.
