The Do-Over / Video & Full Set DL

Do-Over last Sunday was crazy as expected. I first played there last year and was very impressed, this year's visit was just as fun. As always, Crane's Tavern was packed to the limit, with a crazy line outside from early afternoon on.

Here's two video clips courtesy of homie Glen Jamn.

And here's the full audio recording, 82 minutes in total. Enjoy:
DJ Anonymous: Live at Do-Over, September 2009 (128kbps)

Also, a ton of killer Do-Over sets from a variety of great DJ's available for free DL over at the Do-Over blog.

Respect to Chris, Jamie and Aloe for letting me do my thing once again. Also shout outs to Glen, Waldo, DJ Excel, Steven Bloodbath, Viktor Duplaix.

Nightlife Unlimited, September 2009 Edition

Shout outs to everyone who came to Dance Right last night. I had a brief but very enjoyable time behind the decks.

During my set someone asked about the version of Peaches And Prunes I played. I couldn't recall the details there, but here it is, a really cool take on the timeless Ron Hardy classic. Enjoy.

I Can't Shake This Feeling (1982)
A perfect example of the type of super uplifting 80's jam that feels annoying one day and just right the next.

You Say You're Looking For A Lover...

Get In Touch With Me (1983)
Classic jam, produced by The Whispers' Nicholas Caldwell. I loved the bassline ever since I heard it sampled on Clark Kent's remix of Chubb Rock's Just The Two Of Us (DL).

Remain Anonymous

Ras Kass: Remain Anonymous (1994)
You best believe this was my shit back then, too bad it hasn't aged as well as some indie rap hits from the era. It's still entertaining nonetheless. I didn't follow his career much after this, but always felt he was a pretty good rapper.

I Don't Want To Be The Last To Know

Somewhat forgotten slow jam by one of Solar's biggest acts... Just the right kind of smooth for this winter night. Female lead by Jody Watley, of course.

Oh Yeah, Them Records...

So in addition to partying I had to do some record shopping as well (of course!) and in DJ's Delight tradition here's a little something for ya'll to play out too.

This here is a very very nice electro R&B jam on a label that went on to release a lot of early West Coast rap. Written by Kashif and produced by Rich Cason (see Formula IV as well) it's kind of an all-star affair. Alfreda and Billy don't really get to sing too much, the focus stays on Cason's synth work and I'm definitely not mad at that.

...and one from N.Y.
Skyy: Here's To You (12" Version) (1980)
I wasn't even going to post this as it's such a classic, but I've been on a bit of a Skyy kick recently so why not? Randy Muller is the man and this is one of his finest moments. The 12" is surprisingly hard to come by and I could never find a clean copy cheap. It wasn't exactly a bargain now, but I got $50 off the tag so I just said fuck it and grabbed it.

I'm Back

So I'm back home in the cold, wet but nonetheless charming city of HKI and finally getting over the jet lag too. LA and NY were both real cool experiences, mostly because I had the privilege to hang out, kick it and dj with some real cool peoples such as
Dave Tompkins, Kohji & BBP & crew, Eli Escobar, Johnny, Jared, Toshio, Asaf, Amir, Doc Delay, Georgia, Dreski, Soulstrut crew, Anit, John Kirby, Monk One, Orlando, Cosmo Baker, Sydney, Eleven, Ayres, Excel, Teddy King, Jessica @ Spectre, Emynd, Bo Bliz, JD, everybody @ LAX, James Pants, Dam Funk, Steve 1der, Chris Haycock, Aloe Blacc, Waldo, Blu Jemz, Lax, Gracie, Glen, DJ Magneto, Arsi, Soatiana, Noelle, Shärki, Juuso, Aksim and last but most definitely not least:
Josh D (damn those aiffs were OFF THE HOOK), Asha (great meeting you), Mike B (the dudest of ALL dudes, I owe you big time) & Chairman Mao (the feedback on my writing was much appreciated lol).

All of the nights were a lot of fun- big up to the promoters who made it all happen- but the most memorable was no doubt The Do-Over on Labor Day Sunday. Great crowd, dancing from early afternoon on, countless pitchers of sangria and hot music all day long... f'real, what more could one ask for?

Steve 1nder killing it, my crappy camera phone doesn't even do it justice...

Killer Groove II

Formula V: Killer Groove II (1983)

Killer Groove is exactly what the title says. The number II refers the instrumental version, I always preferred it to the vocal as it's subtle and kind of epic at the same time. The occasional vocoders and chants add a nice touch. The song is produced by Rich Cason of Galactic Force fame and originally appeared on his tiny Write On label before being licensed to former TK subsidiary Malaco.

Do It All For You

This here is ex-Raydio dude Jerry Knight's catchy synth bass jam from his 1982 album Love On Our Side, ripped and edited for your convenience. It should go well with your Rick James set. I had the record since forever, but somehow managed to overlook the whole thing until today morning... Enjoy!

L.A. Nights / London Town

L.A. Nights and London Town are both certified jazz-funk classics, super mellow and just right for your Sunday afternoon. What's curious is that they are essentially the same song, recorded twice with different lyrics. Both were produced by Augie Johnson of Side Effect fame.

Yasuko Agawa: L.A. Nights (1986)

Light Of The World: London Town (Full Length Version)(1981)

A special shout out to my man DJ Day for reminding me to post these two gems.

Erule B-sides

Some of you might be old enough to remember Erule's 1994 underground classic "Listen Up". The L.A. rapper disappered after that, to return a few years later with a single called "Worldwide Domination" that got like zero distribution. The b-side was hot though, as had been the case with "Listen Up". I won't say "Synopsis" is better than "Listen Up", but I will say "Nik Luv" is definitely better than "Worldwide Domination", up there with the first 12".
Erule: Synopsis (1994)
Erule: Nik Luv (1998)
BTW, there must be something wrong with the innernet, I couldn't find a proper photo of dude to go with this post...
UPDATE: I just got a mail from an old friend & local MC/DJ legend Iwere who sent the photo above, scanned from Rap Pages' December 1994 L.A. underground issue... Thanks again!
