Classic Time #46

I'm having a Friday night off and will be leaving for the countryside soon. I'll be back in the mix tomorrow night (my HKI people I'll see you here) and will make sure to play this timeless Philly rap jam. Ok ok I'll play Birthday Sex as well, don't worry.

Serious

I finally got my laptop back. I really wanted to do a post and shout out all the cool peoples I met in Tokyo last week, but that will have to wait as I need to run any minute now. I just had to post a classic rap jam though... and omg they don't get much better than this.

Movin In All Directions

People's Choice: Movin In All Directions Y2TheZ Edit (1975/2006)
Dope instrumental edit of the funky Philly disco jam. Some of you might remember the killer bass line from Daniel Wang's seminal In The Street.
Oh yeah, that's an aiff too.

Classic Time #40

Breakwater: No Limit (12" Mix)(1978)
I always loved the jam and it's classy production, but never noticed the writers are Grey & Hanks of RCA Disco fame, until just now. Weird, man, weird. Anyways... the 12" mix of this is what you wanna have as it's longer and features a cool extension of the breakdown in the middle.
My ol' head Philly peoples (Toney B & Cosmo what's up!!) always talk about the flipside (Do It Til The Fluid Gets Hot ) being a local classic, but I never got the chance to hear it out in a club there. One day man, one day.
The band is also responsible for this sweet groove and this famous Daft Punk sample, among other things.

I'm Back...

...and there was a ton of good stuff in my inbox.

Brand new mix by my man Smutlee in London. Dancehall and funky all the way, with big hits from both genres mixed with lesser known tunes and exclusive blends.
Smutlee: November Dancehall & Funky Mix

And another classy mix, this one from my Soulico peoples in Tel-Aviv. This is a live recording and has a real laid back warm-up vibe to it.
DJ EyalRob: Soul Ecstasy live at the Shesek Pt 1

This is finally out and you definitely need to grab it if you enjoy banging club beats with Lil Jon samples and solid raps. And I know you do.
Get the 320

My HKI peoples: Emynd (and Bo Bliz) @ Redrum Saturday next week, more on that soon.

The Roc-A-Fella post

The other day I realized my digital game was really hurting in the early- to mid-00's rap department. So I went out of my way for some quality 12" rips, starting with the mighty Roc. Here's a random bunch of solid classics from the label's golden era. Most of these I haven't heard out for years now (might be a local thing), at least a few definitely deserve to be brought back in a big way.

Memphis Bleek: Remember The Roc Freestyle (2003)
Cool freestyle that serves as a little intro, the Just Blaze beat is super smooth.

Freeway feat Jay-Z & Beanie Sigel: What We Do (2002)
Scarface feat Jay-Z & Beanie Sigel: Guess Who's Back (2002)
One of the illest Kanye beats to this day.

State Property: Got Nowhere... (2002)
Another bangin early Kanye beat, from the State Property album.

Cam'ron feat Ludacris, U.G.K., Trina & Jewlez Santana: What Means The World To You Remix (2000)
They actually spell Juelz "Jewlez" on the sticker, no joke. Dude is like 15 here.

Diplomats: Built This City (2003)
Just Blaze & Jefferson Starship, how can you go wrong?
And we're gonna close this with 4 more Dipset bangers over Heatmakerz beats...
Juelz Santana feat Cam'ron: You Oughta Know (2003)

Juelz Santana: Down (2003)

Diplomats: I'm Ready (2002)

Diplomats: Dipset Anthem (2003)

Shout outs to my fellow HKI DJ's and bloggers K2 (the local king of this sound, Soul Clap what what?) and Fyrre (whose tireless efforts turned many a HKI youth into Dipset believers).
