I Can't Sleep Baby

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na. Kells slow jams in the middle of the night... insomnia's a bitch ain't it.

R. Kelly: I Can't Sleep Baby (If I) Remix (1996)

Choice remix from the flipside of I Believe I Can Fly. DJ Nehpets did a bangin ghetto house remix that I wanted to post too, but it's on an external somewhere and I'm not about to go look for it at 5am. You can hear it on my Dance Mania mix from a while back, it's track number 2.

Nightlife Unlimited, September 2009 Edition

Shout outs to everyone who came to Dance Right last night. I had a brief but very enjoyable time behind the decks.

During my set someone asked about the version of Peaches And Prunes I played. I couldn't recall the details there, but here it is, a really cool take on the timeless Ron Hardy classic. Enjoy.

Dynamik Duo

Sometime last year I posted the Rude Rydims remix of Capleton's Tour (I'm afraid the link is dead by now) and kind of promised to post the Dynamik Duo remix too. Dynamik Duo was Lil Jon's production team back in the day, they did bass stuff for So So Def as well as dancehall remixes for multiple labels.

Tour (The Dynamik Duo Remix) 1994

So here it is, finally. It's pretty damn simple, just blending the acapella with some Children's Story and Mona Lisa drums, but that's exactly how I like it.
The other notable dancehall remix they did was Capleton's Wings Of The Morning.

Serious

I finally got my laptop back. I really wanted to do a post and shout out all the cool peoples I met in Tokyo last week, but that will have to wait as I need to run any minute now. I just had to post a classic rap jam though... and omg they don't get much better than this.

No You Girls Instrumental

I'm kind of feeling The Juan MacLean's whole style now. One Day is still going strong and most of the remixes have been real solid too. This is no exception. The acid line and the chopped up Apache go well together, but I can definitely live without the singer and therefore prefer the instrumental version.

Holy Ghost! delivers once again but I could definitely use a dub version as well. Their new single 'I Will Come Back" will be out on DFA next month, backed with DJ Mehdi and Classixx remixes. If there's a copy floating around that I've missed please send me.

Btw, make sure to grab their solid edit of Hugh Masakela's classic Don't Go Lose It as well.

Hova R&B Guest Spots

I've been ripping a ton of R&B lately. There's a bunch of stuff I wanted to post, but for now I opted for this little triplet of choice Jay-Z guest spots from the era of R&B remixes and throwback beats. Two out of the three build on classic Biz Markie loops and the third one totally jacks Computer Love, to good effect of course. The Mya remix was the biggest hit obviously and still gets some spins, the other two I don't ever hear anywhere really...

Top Ten List - March 2009

I've been too damn busy getting my stuff together for the Japan trip tomorrow- not too busy to compile the monthly top 10 though. Here's a real random list of songs I've been really feeling lately, from R&B to dancehall to UK funky to minimal house to whatnot... and some cool DL's too.

1. The-Dream: Mr. Yeah (320)
Choice cut from Love VS Money, out now.
2. Mavado: Neva Believe U (256)
Incredible...
3. 2000F & J Kamata: You Don't Know What Love Is (YouTube)
Still feelin this, will grab the 12" too whenever I see it.
4. Ill Blu & Princess Nyah: Frontline (Myspace)
Real smooth funky jam.
5. Young Dro: Clean With It (160 via Fader via Nah Right)
Top notch production on this.
6. Cerrone: Rocket In The Pocket (Bladerunners Edit)
George what's up... you need to put this out!
7. Lil Tony: Juuri (Myspace)
Helsinki in the building!
8. Vybz Kartel & Spice: Ramping Shop (256)
The OG version with the Ne-Yo beat still murders, the remake not so much.
9. Roska: In Your Handbag (YouTube)
So good. Grabbed the 12" already.
10. Woolfy: Oh Missy (In Flagranti's Meat-Packing Mix) (Hypem--> 320)
Real cool edits on this crazy remix.

That's How We Move it

I kind of always thought Check It Out was the weakest of the three Reel To Reel singles. As much as I enjoyed Puba and Mary, the A-side never did much for me. But I must've really slept on the b-side, cause the remix of That's How We Move It buried there is like the best thing ever. I mean, how could it not be, with Puba in top form over a sample like this?

Hi, This Is Carol Williams

Carol Williams: Can't Get Away (From Your Love) Special Club Dub Mix
Some more disco nerdery before we move on. After a few months of club and radio play Carol Williams' 1982 New York hit Can't Get Away (From Your Love) was given a special dub mix by Vanguard's in-house DJ Ray "Pinky" Velasquez . Carol herself added the famous spoken word intro, the remix was pressed on one-sided 10" vinyl and sent out to A-list Tri-State DJ's as an appreciation of their support. All in all, it's one of the coolest special mixes from the era and has been bootlegged once or twice too.

Almost There

We're Almost There DJ Spinna Remix (2001)

I've said it before and I'll say it again. This is most likely my favorite DJ Spinna production ever. I guess part of the charm is the fact that I find remixes of such classics almost always a mere waste of time. This was originally only released in Japan (it was swiftly bootlegged in the UK though) and if I'm not mistaken that is the case to this day.

Ray'von: No Gun, No Murder (Hip Hop Remix)(1994)

Some real classic dancehall remix business right here. This was a joint release between VP and Dope On Plastic, Funkmaster Flex's label. The production is credited to someone who calls himself Da Big Daadee, but as far as I know that's Flex himself on the boards.

Dolly My Baby

Super Cat feat Notorious BIG, Puffy & Mary J Blige: Dolly My Baby (Bad Boy Extended Mix)(1993)

I don't think this is up there with Ghetto Red Hot as far as dancehall / hip hop remixes go, but the Watermelon beat is hot and the Biggie verse towards the end makes it worthwhile after all. Puffy trying to be all grimy and stuff is kinda annoying, though, so you might want to cue point the notorious one right away. "I love it when they call me Big Poppa, the show stoppa, the rhyme droppa..."

Rude Rydims

Before Jigmastas and way before his later house career I knew DJ Spinna as the other half of Rude Rydims. The other half was this dude called Nkansa. They put out 2 hot party records in the mid-90's and did some cool remix work as well.

Rude Rydims: Everybody Bounce (1995)

Rude Rydims: You Could Even Dance (1995)
from Rude Rydims Experiment II

Everybody Bounce is my jam, I used to play it A LOT back then and kind of rediscovered it last year. You Could Even Dance is from Volume II which I actually didn't even have until I got one in Tokyo and it's really good too.
