Robert Palmer
So I'm in Tokyo and have a few off days between deejaying obligations. It's the rainy season so I believe I'll be staying in my hotel room a lot, working and possibly even blogging. Let's see.
I just got back from Hiyoko Records in Shimokitazawa and their Compass Point section sent me on a crazy Robert Palmer YT spree. Dude had a knack for choosing songs to cover. Wikipedia has a cool story on how his version of You're In My System came about:
""You Are In My System" was an example of Palmer's passion for R&B covers. He jammed the song onto the Pride album after the other tracks were finished. Hearing the track in a Paris club, Palmer rushed back to his Bahamas hometown, where the reconvened band (co-composer David Frank of The System included) put together the number."
Make sure to also check his version of Cherrelle's I Didn't Mean To Turn You On, a big hit in the early days of MTV.

Clouds Across The Moon
Just got back home from China. We had a great time, a few truly spectacular dinners and some solid gigs. People there know how to party. I kind of missed YouTube though, it's totally blocked there.
As far as clubs in Shanghai & Beijing go, the prevailing trends seem to be 2003 style top 40 R&B and nondescript tech house. Me and my Top Billin homie Flipperi pulled it off pretty good with our current disco & house faves, though. One Day especially was big (again), which I loved. Video to follow.

Also, I'll be at Nefertiti in Gothenburg, Sweden, tomorrow Saturday doing a classic disco & soul set. Locals get at me via email for guestlist & whatnot.
And once more for all of you who missed this the first time around, the impeccable Stand Back Remix:

Incredible Grace Jones Ad
I'm just back home after 2 weeks in Japan. I'll be posting a couple of 12"s from the trip soon, but I'm too jet lagged to do any ripping now so I'll just leave you with this mid-80's gem...
And on a related note, this is pretty impressive as well.

Now this is pretty cool
Back in 1979 Kraftwerk's record label commissioned Roger Mainwood to do an animated film based on Autobahn, which was subsequently released on one of the first ever laser discs. The film went to win various prizes at animation festivals and was shown at the 1979 London Film Festival.

Classic scene from a classic movie. Rosie Perez is just incredible, as always. I just wish they had the Helsinki scene up on Youtube as well.

Just The Way You Like It
I've been trying to figure out what the ultimate S.O.S. Band jam is. Has to be from the Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis era, that's for sure. On some other day I might go for High Hopes, Borrowed Love, The Finest or even the omnipresent Just Be Good To Me, but today...

Just The Way You Like It (Long Version)(1984)
Btw, check the incredible video as well.
BONUS:
The slow jam masterpiece from the same album. Essential.
Weekend Girl (LP Version)(1984)

Mos Def, Jay, Prince & Stevie / Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin & Biggie
Damn, I used to play this a lot at one point. Now it's been a while and it's sounding fresh as ever again.
Q-TIp: Let's Ride (1999)
(click to preview or righ click save as to DL)
Btw, make sure to check the new jam and the somewhat bangerific Swizz Beats remix if you haven't yet.
Also, a request: if anyone has a high bitrate version of the ancient unreleased ATCQ jam Mr Incognito I'd really appreciate it. My old bootleg 12"'s too damn beat up to rip.

Jockin Jay-Z (Dirty 320)
Just re-posting some shit that's been all over the nets since last night. I don't think it's properly mixed either, but kinda enjoyable nonetheless.
And while on the topic of the Roc, this just dropped. One of my favorite cuts from Graduation.

80 Blocks From Tiffany's (1979)
From a review over at IMDB:
"An intimate look at life on the streets for young teen juvie offenders. Shockingly realistic interviews with gang members of the savage nomads and the savage skulls. Amazingly this authentic documentary does not contain any of the normal pitfalls that befuddle today's more exploitive "gang" investigative films of the " 60mins." type. - the film maker Gary Weis of SNL fame manages to completely let the film speak for itself. A rare glimpse into late 70's New York towards the end of the infamous South Bronx Gangs. The documentary shows many sides of the mainly Puerto Rican community of the South Bronx including. reformed gang members, current gang members, the police, and the community leaders who try and reach out to them. A film like this is simply unable to be made today !"
Part 1 below... follow this link to the rest of the 8 parts.
Shout outs to Ost.

4 x Love You Down
I kinda love the song, so let me break down my favorite versions.
Inoj: Love You Down (1997)
Classic bass / R&B cover version from Atlanta. Check the video as well.
DJ Technics: Girlfriend (1999)
The definitive club remix. Baltimore Club Tracks has tons of classics by Technics & others, a lot of 320's too.
Sissy Nobby: Break It Down (Stick 'Em Remix) (2007)
Bangin remix of Nobby's bounce hit from last year, with the smooth Love You Down breakdown in the middle. I just wish I knew where to get more of his jams.
And last but not least...
Ready For The World's timeless slow jam from 1986 got zero airplay around my parts, which is a damn shame if you ask me. I don't think I even got to hear it until mid-90's or so. Here's the classic video for you to revisit. Enjoy.

The Big Daddy Kane, Little Daddy Shane overdoers
Smoothe Da Hustler & Trigga Da Gambler: Broken Language (1995)
I got the sudden urge to post this before the winter is over. I just came to think of the fact that while some of us take tracks like this for granted there must also be people who never heard it. To those I can only say that to this day it's one of the sickest duets ever recorded.
BONUS:
Special Ed: Neva Go Back (1995)
Another red cover Profile 12" from the same era that I just happened to pull out. While Broken Language has been a certified classic since day one I always felt this was somewhat underrated.

I can't make the OnSmash embedding fit here, but Spike Jonze's video to Kanye's Flashing Lights is finally out and it's indeed very very good.

Serge

For whatever reason I've been on a real Gainsbourg kick today. Maybe it's the recent Les Années Psychédéliques comp I've had on repeat for a while. If I
still smoked I'd go get me a pack of Gitanes for the night, no doubt.
And before I go, just a little something for the DJ's here.

This here is one of The Dude's coolest songs...
Btw, my Best Of Devin-mix from a few years back is still up in case you haven't checked it yet.

Sade: By Your Side Neptunes Remix
This was everywhere a few years back, I can't believe I never saw the video until now. Such a great remix of such a great song.
If you love Sade like I do you'll find the 2001 live version entertaining as well. I wish I'll get the chance to see her onstage one day.

I Love Minnie
She was just perfect and died way too young in 1979, at just 31 years of age. I usually don't even read Youtube comments & responses, but I can definitely respect Babybear62 dropping knowledge here:
"Minnie is the only singer 2 reach beyond 5 octave vocal range. In the song "Reasons" she holds a crescendo scale up to 6th & 7th octave range & ends up two octaves above the staff. Mariah Carey cannot do this. Mariah Carey can only hold five octave. Minnie goes 7th octave. In 1999, Mariah's album "Rainbow", Mariah "mimicked" Minnie's song "Bliss" on the 3rd track of the album. Carey can be heard singing the phrase "On and On" similar to Minnie Rippleton's style but not as good as Minnie"
And here's 3 slightly less known but still very much essential Minnie moments for your enjoyment...
Minnie Ripperton: Here We Go (1980)
Minnie Ripperton: Memory Lane (1979)
Minnie Ripperton: Reasons (1974)
