Dynamik Duo

Sometime last year I posted the Rude Rydims remix of Capleton's Tour (I'm afraid the link is dead by now) and kind of promised to post the Dynamik Duo remix too. Dynamik Duo was Lil Jon's production team back in the day, they did bass stuff for So So Def as well as dancehall remixes for multiple labels.

Tour (The Dynamik Duo Remix) 1994

So here it is, finally. It's pretty damn simple, just blending the acapella with some Children's Story and Mona Lisa drums, but that's exactly how I like it.
The other notable dancehall remix they did was Capleton's Wings Of The Morning.

You Should Never Test The Champion

Pinchers: Bandelero + Version (1991)
Pinchers' '91 classic Bandelero is truly one of my all time faves. Not only is dude's voice unbelievable, the lyrics are pure dancehall bravado told in terms of spaghetti western classics. Genius.
The rip here is from a slightly busted Jammy's 12" (as you will hear) and includes the version unedited in the end.

Top Ten List - March 2009

I've been too damn busy getting my stuff together for the Japan trip tomorrow- not too busy to compile the monthly top 10 though. Here's a real random list of songs I've been really feeling lately, from R&B to dancehall to UK funky to minimal house to whatnot... and some cool DL's too.

1. The-Dream: Mr. Yeah (320)
Choice cut from Love VS Money, out now.
2. Mavado: Neva Believe U (256)
Incredible...
3. 2000F & J Kamata: You Don't Know What Love Is (YouTube)
Still feelin this, will grab the 12" too whenever I see it.
4. Ill Blu & Princess Nyah: Frontline (Myspace)
Real smooth funky jam.
5. Young Dro: Clean With It (160 via Fader via Nah Right)
Top notch production on this.
6. Cerrone: Rocket In The Pocket (Bladerunners Edit)
George what's up... you need to put this out!
7. Lil Tony: Juuri (Myspace)
Helsinki in the building!
8. Vybz Kartel & Spice: Ramping Shop (256)
The OG version with the Ne-Yo beat still murders, the remake not so much.
9. Roska: In Your Handbag (YouTube)
So good. Grabbed the 12" already.
10. Woolfy: Oh Missy (In Flagranti's Meat-Packing Mix) (Hypem--> 320)
Real cool edits on this crazy remix.

Top Ten List - February 2009

I'm starting a kind of old fashioned monthly top ten list of current stuff I'm feeling and playing out, just so the blog won't be about classics alone. Cause I'm really not the stuck in the past kind of dude, even if some of the posts might give that impression lol. Here we go with this month's favorites, word to Masta Ace.

1. Shaggy: Bad Mon Don't Cry 320
2. Joker & Ginz: Purple City Myspace
3. Sebastian Tellier: Kilometer (A-Trak Remix) Fairtilizer
4. Beniton: Recession 320
5. Geeneus feat Katy B: As I Myspace
6. Q-Tip feat Busta, Raekwon & Lil Wayne: Renaissance Rap Remix 160
7. Raekwon feat Ghostface & Method Man: Wu Ooh 256
8. Moodymann: Freaky MF YouTube
9. Renaissance Man: Spraycan + Sharkslayer Remix Myspace
10. Zomby: Rumours & Revolutions YouTube

+1: Treasure Fingers: Come True Tonight Dub Mix 320
This has been floating a round for more than a year, but according to my man Nick at Fool's Gold it's not even finished yet. It's a banger nonetheless, here's hoping there will be an official release one day.

Classic Time #41

Shabba Ranks: Respect (1993)
A massive tune on the Hot Milk riddim best known for Barrington's timeless Murderer. Shabba's pretty damn convincing schooling the younger stars and shouting out foundation deejays.
It's a 45 rip and sounds just like it too lol.

Haven't done one of these in a minute, had to return with one of the all-time greats. This is the massive 6 minute version too, with 2 minutes of dubbing after the vocals. Enjoy...

I'm Back...

...and there was a ton of good stuff in my inbox.

Brand new mix by my man Smutlee in London. Dancehall and funky all the way, with big hits from both genres mixed with lesser known tunes and exclusive blends.
Smutlee: November Dancehall & Funky Mix

And another classy mix, this one from my Soulico peoples in Tel-Aviv. This is a live recording and has a real laid back warm-up vibe to it.
DJ EyalRob: Soul Ecstasy live at the Shesek Pt 1

This is finally out and you definitely need to grab it if you enjoy banging club beats with Lil Jon samples and solid raps. And I know you do.

No Guns, No Murder

Ray'von: No Gun, No Murder (Hip Hop Remix)(1994)

Some real classic dancehall remix business right here. This was a joint release between VP and Dope On Plastic, Funkmaster Flex's label. The production is credited to someone who calls himself Da Big Daadee, but as far as I know that's Flex himself on the boards.

Btw, last year I did a little uptempo blend that uses the Ray'von vocals over the Earth People Dance beat, check it out if you missed it back then.

Fed Up A Run Red

As far as I'm concerned, Fed Up A Run Red is one of the coolest releases to ever come out of HKI.
Richie Spice, Bounty Killer & Capleton: Fed Up A Run Red (Knut Posse Remix)(2006)

On a related note, here's a little clip from last night's party with Rory of Stone Love. Big up Stone Love, big up Komposti.

Dolly My Baby

Super Cat feat Notorious BIG, Puffy & Mary J Blige: Dolly My Baby (Bad Boy Extended Mix)(1993)

I don't think this is up there with Ghetto Red Hot as far as dancehall / hip hop remixes go, but the Watermelon beat is hot and the Biggie verse towards the end makes it worthwhile after all. Puffy trying to be all grimy and stuff is kinda annoying, though, so you might want to cue point the notorious one right away. "I love it when they call me Big Poppa, the show stoppa, the rhyme droppa..."

Can't Believe It

Guess what? Can't Believe It was the first T-Pain song in a long while I wasn't really feelin at all. Now I just got this dancehall blend by Paris' DJ Weedim and it completely made the song for me.

90's Riddim

About time I posted some new dancehall... This is the 90's Riddim, produced by Suku of Ward 21. There's like 10 songs in total, here's my choice 3 for you to check out.

Buju Banton: Model Inna Dance
Mr Easy: Long Jefity
Mega Banton: Never

BONUS: This ain't brand new, but I like it a lot and seems like every time I play it someone comes up to ask what it is. Produced by Black Chiney, the song appears on the Estelle full length as well as a Jamaican 45.

Estelle: Come Over

She also does the song live with John Legend.

Big up Komposti Sound.

Rude Rydims

Before Jigmastas and way before his later house career I knew DJ Spinna as the other half of Rude Rydims. The other half was this dude called Nkansa. They put out 2 hot party records in the mid-90's and did some cool remix work as well.

Rude Rydims: Everybody Bounce (1995)
from Rude Rydims Experiment
Rude Rydims: You Could Even Dance (1995)
from Rude Rydims Experiment II

BONUS:
Capleton: Tour (Rude Rydims Bonus Mix)(1994)

Everybody Bounce is my jam, I used to play it A LOT back then and kind of rediscovered it last year. You Could Even Dance is from Volume II which I actually didn't even have until I got one in Tokyo and it's really good too. The Capleton remix is from the same Tour 12" that features another remix by a very young Jonathan "Lil Jon" Smith. I'll post that one later, together with some other dancehall things he did back in the day.

Ring The Alarm! - Friday night @ 6 Linja

Shopping in Japan

So I returned from Japan just before Christmas. I can't front, I love the country more and more everytime I get to go. Obviously once again hours on end were spent record shopping, here's a few choice rips of things I brought home.

Brian & Tony Gold: Between The Sheets
One of my faves from this trip, a truly classy 80's dancehall version of the Isley masterpiece. Already played it out 3 times.

Vanessa Williams: Happiness
R&B fave from 1997, have no idea what happened to my copy so had to buy a new one.

Mos Def & Vinia Mojica: Magnificient
I haven't really followed dudes career recently. This Clash sampling white label from some 5 years back was cool though and I remember trying to locate one back then. My man DJ Didier used to play this a lot.

Hamilton Bohannon: Let's Start The Dance
A true disco classic, the 12" with the original version is hard to get and eluded me for years.

ESG: Party Music (Party + Raw Edit)
I don't know why I didn't already have this as I'm a fan of ESG and 99 Records in general. This is from their 1988 EP on Popular Records and is up there with any of their more famous songs. The song comes in two versions- the second slightly faster than the first- I quickly edited them together so you can play them back to back if you wish.

Major shout outs to my man Makoto at Hiyoko Records. Those who lived in New York around millennium might remember him from Weekend Records in Williamsburg, his new shop in Shimokitazawa is one of Tokyo's best and well worth the 20 minute subway ride from Shinjuku or Shibuya.

I'll post photos as soon as my man Fiskars sends me some. Also there's plenty more records still on their way, including some cool Japanese things, so stay tuned.

Classic Riddim #3: Red Alert

This might be too recent to call a classic, but the fact is I really enjoy the techno vibe of it. I guess I also needed an excuse to big up their new Mix Up EP on Mad Decent, which is more or less the best thing out right now.

Cecile: Hot Like We
Ward 21: Player Haters
Capleton: Real Hot
Lady Saw: Don't Trespass
T.O.K.: Let It Shine

BONUS:
The South Rakkas' Mix Up EP on Mad Decent is in stores now. I'm telling you, just buy it. If you need further proof check out Carry Feelings feat T.O.K, courtesy of the Disco Devil. Diplo said that if things work out the EP will also be on Itunes in the very near future, so watch out...

2070 Riddim

Those following Jamaican music closely are most likely already familiar with the disco-funky 2070 riddim. Those of you who downloaded my Summer 2007 mix back in August also know at least one song, namely Voicemail's entertaining Kool & The Gang rendition "Get Down On It". Other songs on the riddim reference random 70's hits as well. My favorites are Voicemail and Nicky B's hilarious "High Like A Kite". You can download a 10 minute 2070 medley here, courtesy of Swedish dancehall blog Boomwahdis.

2070 Medley tracklist:
Voicemail - Get Down On It
Movado - Dont Tek It Fi Joke
Vybz Kartel - Bruk Out
Wayne Marshall - Party Like 1975
Craig Dennis & SOLTEX 3000 - Party
Tami Chynn - Rolling
Chino - Ganja man
Nicky B - High Like A Kite
Elephant Man - Smell

New blend

Here's a quick blend i just did. For some time now I've cherished the idea of dancehall vocals over disco and house beats, partly inspired by the Noisy Bunch blend below. I tried a few things and this is the first that worked well enough to make it public...

Disco Request

Mary Clark: Take Me I'm Yours
Top Cat & Mary Clark: Disco Request (Noisy Bunch Remix)

The Disco Request Remix has been one of my secret weapons ever since it's release a few years back. Seems like it works no matter where you drop it. Mary Clark is the disco record they used for the beat: a semi-obscure, extra-funky Patrick Adams production from 1980. If you enjoyed the remix check out the Noisy Bunch Myspace, they got a cool Mr Oizo remix up there.

Classic Riddim #1: Bookshelf

A dancehall staple since it's release in 1998, Tony "CD" Kelly's Bookshelf just might be my all time favorite riddim. I definitely wouldn't be mad at hearing more hip hop & club deejays play it as well.

Wayne Wonder: Watching You
Sean Paul: Deport Them
Sasha: Dat Sexy Body
Tanto Metro & DaVonte: Say Wooee
Beenie Man: Bookshelf

EDIT: Broken links fixed and one more song added.

More dancehall remixes

Two somewhat different dancehall remixes here: Budy Bye over a slew of early 90's East Coast rap hits and Hyperventilating over a timeless pop classic. Both work in their own way... Enjoy!

Johnny Osbourne: Budy Bye (Kenny Dope Super Dub Remix)
T.O.K and Tami Chynn: Hyper Monday (Rebel Remix)

Bad man nuh cultivate sunflower seed

Here's a real banging ganja tune on the Dun Dem riddim from 2000 or so. I used to play this quite a lot back then, but lost the 12" somewhere and only located it last weekend while going through some old stacks for the Kovalevy gig... Also included is the useful hip hop remix over the ever popular "I Just Wanna Love You" beat by Jay-Z.

Burro Banton: Phenomenum 2
EDIT: The rip is fucked... I'll re-rip in the future.

Classic Time #8

I can very clearly remember when I first heard this. It was a reggae night at a long defunct venue (Sodan alakerta for the locals) and I was like "dayymn this must be the best dancehall song ever made". Now I might have to reconsider that, but the intro alone still sends chills up my spine every single time I hear it. Not to mention the bassline that is just sick.

Reggae Remakes

Japanin P-Vine-lafkalla ilmestyi loppuvuodesta kokoelmallinen dancehall-artistien tekemiä, Floridan South Rakkas Crewn tuottamia versiointeja 80-luvun pop-klassikoista. Tavallaan älytön konsepti, vaan lopputulos on ajoittain vielä äääälyttömämpi. Ja hyvällä tavalla. Alla muutama kohokohta, varsinkin Bounty saa joka kerta hyvälle tuulelle...
