Recommended Reading

I can't recall what I was searching for when I stumbled on writer/critic Carol Cooper's (Village Voice, Rolling Stone etc) homepage. Doesn't matter, really. If you're interested in solid contemporary writing on artists we all know & love you should pay her a visit as well.
I particularly enjoyed her pieces on Emerald, Sapphire & Gold (ESG), August Darnell and of course Prince.

A Taste Of Honey

Rescue Me has been one up my favorite jams to cut up for as long as I can remember. It's such a catchy groove and seems to always work. I'm playing records tonight and just pulled the doubles out again. For you I got a little intro edit I did back when I first got Serato 3 years ago.

2 Years of DJ's Delight

I just realized I started this little hobby of mine exactly 2 years ago today, with pretty boring posts on Atmosfear, Sade and local producers. It took one week and a post on an ancient mix of mine to generate any traffic, though.

I want to thank all of my regular visitors and subscribers for hanging on so long. This has been a lot of fun, taught me a lot about music and opened some doors too so let's keep it going.

Two celebrate these 2 years, here's 2 versions of my favorite weird old school classic. Area Code 615's harmonica jam from 1970 is pretty well known, but the mid-80's Italian bootleg remix incorporating the You'll Like It Too break is kind of obscure I guess. As weird as the groove is, it seems it always appealed to a lot of different DJ's, maybe it's time someone recycled it again.

I'm playing a B-Boy event tomorrow, so I wanted to post something a little bit...funky. And to me, this is as funky as it gets. The whole Hustler's Convention album is incredible, I don't know if it's available as we speak, but if you ever see it don't hesitate to grab it. With Kool & The Gang and Last Poets' Lightnin Rod on the same record you can't really go wrong. This is the classic jammy:

This little edit I just did was inspired by all of the recent recession talk (I picked up The Economist yesterday- clearly a mistake), the fact that some people still think Simply Red wrote this themselves and knowing most other DJ's don't approve of the original version's borderline cheesy horn intro.
