Random 70's Jams For The Holidays

Yeah you guessed it, I've been ripping albums again. Here's a few choice cuts.

Time Is Passing (1977)
Dedicated to all those who were heavy into the School Of Hard Knocks like I was

Wandering (1976)
Classic Jamaican soul sounds recorded in Miami, produced by the legendary King Sporty who went on to produce 80's electronic masterpieces Haven't Been Funked Enough and Get Down among other things

Mother Earth (1974)
Beautiful mellow song from the album best known for Jay-Z's Friend Or Foe loop

Flower Dance (1976)
Tasty French library jam that was used repeatedly by Swedish producers back in the late 90's

Give It Up (1975)
Bangin' cover of the Kool & The Gang classic, only ever released in Sweden (and bootlegged in the UK later)

Evolution (1974)
Just a dope funk song with unintentionally funny lyrics

As far as I'm concerned 45's don't get much better than this.

I'm out the door

...any minute now, on my way to Germany (again). I'll leave you with a little something from last night's 45 ripping spree. This used to be the jam 10 years ago.
Spaghetti Head: Funky Axe (1975)
My Deutsch peoples, if you in the area you can catch me at Studio 672 in Cologne on Friday and at Seeblick in Frankfurt on Saturday.

Rasa

Rasa: Chanting (1978)
Back in high school me and my boy used to go to the local Hare Krishna temple to eat. The all-vegetarian lunch was off the hook and the monks were super friendly as long as you donated at least something. I haven't really messed with the Hare Krishna since, this weirdo funk record being an exception. There's some lesser moments too, but the synth bassline on Chanting is where it's at for me. Sample heads already know what I'm talking about.

Los Masters

Los Masters: Cissy Strut (1969)
One of the best versions of the funk standard, from an unexpected place like Chile too.

Classic Time #37

Sport

I'm playing a B-Boy event tomorrow, so I wanted to post something a little bit...funky. And to me, this is as funky as it gets. The whole Hustler's Convention album is incredible, I don't know if it's available as we speak, but if you ever see it don't hesitate to grab it. With Kool & The Gang and Last Poets' Lightnin Rod on the same record you can't really go wrong. This is the classic jammy:
Lightnin Rod: Sport (1973)

As a bonus, a super dope re-edit of the same. This came out on a 12" last year, I wish I knew who's behind it.

Wicked Funk

Weird early-90's 12" by a bunch of sample-happy Italians. The song's a classic in the Balearic scene, but sounds like straight up hip hop to me.
Kwanzaa Posse: Wicked Funk (1991)

Edit: DL link updated, the initial one seems to have been converted to 128 by Drop.Io. It's 320 like it's supposed to be now.

Serge

For whatever reason I've been on a real Gainsbourg kick today. Maybe it's the recent Les Années Psychédéliques comp I've had on repeat for a while. If I
still smoked I'd go get me a pack of Gitanes for the night, no doubt.

And before I go, just a little something for the DJ's here.

3 x Funk 45

I was never a big 45 dude, but over the years I built a little stash nonethless. I hate taking them out, so I've been ripping as many as I could. Here are a few faves from the funk section. Earl Lett's intro cracks me up every time, it's absurd and mindblowingly good at the same time. Billy Garner's braggadocio is also very entertaining and Message From The Soul Sisters is just great in it's sincerity.

Selects 001

I'm not joking when I say Selects 001 by Chairman Mao and Citizen Kane is one of my all time favorite mixes. On this mix the two DJ's more or less perfected the kind of sophisticated yet accessible blend of soul, disco and funk I myself had been working on at the time and that is what made it so special for me.

Chairman Mao & Citizen Kane: Selects 001 (2001)

Intro
Number One
Subway Baby
Baby Come On
Your Mind
Soul Man
Gold Coast
Nite People
Mongoose
Music (I Like It)
Sing A Simple Song
Stepping Out (Stepping Up)
Marvin's Groove
Step Out
Sweet Maryline
Brother On The Run
Wasted
Ain't No Love Lost
Ain't It Good Feeling Good
Love The Feeling
Dancer
Soul On Your Side
Get No Loving Tonight
Feeling Good
London Town
I'm Out Of Your Life
Looking Up To You
Rude Movements
When I'm With You
Make It Last Forever

The tracklisting above is as it's printed on the sleeve. When the mix came out me and my man Pablo spent hours and hours trying to figure out the full listing, in true record nerd fashion. This was all before I knew Mao. We finally got them all except for one or two that the Chairman himself gave up years later. You too are going to have to work for the full listing, if you get frustrated drop me a line and maybe I'll hook you up. Trust me, the mystery is half the fun.

Btw, while I definitely think mixes like this should be listened to in their entirety I happened to note that the Poisonous Paragraphs blog just recently posted a lower bitrate zip of Selects. If that's what you prefer then check this link.

Shout outs to Mao, Kane, Pablo & DJ's Delight supporter, fellow Selects fan and a dope DJ in his own right, my man Stefski in STHLM.

Daisy Lady

Of all UBB classics Daisy Lady has always been one of the biggest party starters for me. It's also real fun to do doubles of.
7th Wonder: Daisy Lady (Extended Intro Edit)(1979)

BONUS:
And here's the Sugarhill houseband take on it, the hard to find instrumental version of 8th Wonder. Also very effective, with just enough but not too many vocal snippets thrown in.
Sugarhill Gang: 8th Wonder (Instrumental)(1980)

Brian Bennett: Discovery

Here's a little throwback to the not so distant past when sound library records were the greatest thing since sliced bread and I was busy cleaning out studios left and right...
Brian Bennett: Discovery (1980)
This used to be our theme song when me and my then partner DJ Didier first started the Monday night mixshow on Radio Helsinki. I kinda overdosed on it back then, but after a few years of not touching it at all I can see myself playing it again. It's a cool piece of space funk after all.

Last Night Changed It All

I don't think I've played many songs as many times as this over the years... maybe Shook Ones and Hypnotize LOL. Most of the times it's the 12" version with the memorable phone intro that's real fun to cut up, occasionally the other version as well.

Cymande: Arrival

The Cymande dudes have more tried and true classics under their belt than many better known 70's funk groups: Dove, Message, Bra (the scene in Spike Lee's 25th Hour where Philip Seymour Hoffman is drifting towards the restroom with the underage girl, with Bra blasting from the other room, is incredible) and my personal fave Brothers On The Slide for starters. All of the three Janus albums are quality stuff, basically. Then there's the weird fourth album, Arrival, on Paul Winley. No one seems to really know what the deal with that one is. It's somewhat different stylistically and as a whole might not be up there with the early ones, but there's this one jam that I always liked...

2 x S.O.U.L.

S.O.U.L.. Burning Spear (7" Version)
S.O.U.L.: Peace Of Mind
Burning Spear might very well be my all time favorite funk 45 (wait until you hear the cue burn... just ignore it) and Peace Of Mind is one of those great vocal funk tunes with a message as relevant today as back in 1972 when it was recorded.

Friday / Saturday / Sunday

The weekend was hectic to say the least. Friday at Redrum set it off right, it was supposed to be an R&B night but we ended playing classic disco, funk, whatever. Shout outs to Jaako and the Top Rocks crew.
Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul: I've Got So Much Trouble On My Mind

Saturday I took a flight to Stockholm and played Trädgården there with my man Stefski. Our room was off the hook from the minute they opened the doors. Everything from bay rap to dancehall to club music was played and naturally I had to throw in some of my own things as well.
DJ Anonymous: Name Brand Party Break

Sunday night back in HKI I just had to check out the weekly reggae night at Redrum (again). The place was packed and the music was top notch. I was running back and forth to the booth trainspotting 45s, here's a real hot song I had saved on my cell. Big up Komposti.

Real Jamaican Funk

Roots Underground: High Times (1977)
The Skatalites: Herb Man Dub (1975)
Brentford Allstars: Greedy G (197?)

While Greedy G by Studio One house band Brentford Allstars is a stone cold classic and well familiar outside of the reggae scene the two others are slightly more obscure. High Times is off the Tribesman Assault album on Wackies and is still somewhat unknown despite having some of the heaviest drums ever recorded. I first heard it played by my man DJ Didier (Koneisto 2001!) and needless to say I was in the booth trainspotting before the intro break was finished. Herb Man Dub remained unreleased until 1999 but has been a favorite ever since.

Unreleased J.B.'s: Love And Happiness

The promo issue of The J.B.'s classic Damn Right I'm Somebody album (1974) comes with a song that to this day hasn't been released to the public. It's basically an instrumental version of Love And Happiness with James himself sending shout outs to radio jocks that had helped him on his way to the top. He also proclaims that to him "happiness is Fred Wesley playing his horn, playing his heart out, and saying "Hey brother, it's all for free!" ". Now how surprising is that?

Classic Time #11

Beginning Of The End's tribute to the Bahamas, Funky Nassau, was one of the ultimate 70's crossover funk hits. After two albums with the group lead vocalist Ray Munnings went solo and recorded two singles for U.K.'s Tammi label. One of them is an incredible remake of Funky Nassau. The track's been comped once by Norman Jay, but to this day there's no real reissue of it. I got mine back in the day from Stockholm's famous Snickars Records for what seemed like a lot back then, but really wasn't.

Wanna go live on the moon, can't hardly live down here

Ernie Hinesin "Our Generation" vuoden 1971 Electrified-albumilta on huippuhieno funkahtava soul-raita josta ei käsittääkseni ole mitään pätevää uudelleenjulkaisua. Yritin etsiä suhteellisen pienelle huomiolle jääneestä Stax-artistista lisää faktaa ja päädyin Ernien omille gospel-sivuille.

6575

Mukana on joitain kovimmista ikinä nauhoitetuista soul- & funk-stygeistä, period.

6575 Volume 1 Part A (2004)
DORANDO: DIDN'T I (MUSIC CITY)
JOHNSON, HAWKINS, TATUM & DURR: YOU CAN'T BLAME ME (CAPSOUL)
T.S.U.: TORONADOS: NOTHING CAN STOP ME (OVIDE)
TOMMIE YOUNG: HIT & RUN LOVER (SOUL POWER)
BILLY STEWART: WHAT HAVE I DONE (CHESS)
GENE WILLIAMS: DON'T LET YOUR LOVE FADE AWAY (FORTE)
THE TEQUES: DON'T PUSH MY LOVE CUP (GARY)
FRANKIE ZHIVAGO YOUNG: SOMEBODY STOLE MY LOVE (ULTRA)
JAMES K NINE: LIVIN IT UP (FEDERAL)
J.C. & THE SOUL ANGELS: NIGHTMARE STRUT (TAMMY)
MATO & THE MYSTICS: SOUL GROOVE (DUBB INTL)
BERRY STREET STATION: CHOCOLATE SUGAR (CRYSTAL)
THE SAVONICS: SOUL GROOVE (MTA)

6575 Volume 1 Part B (2004)
THE MOHAWKS: BEAT ME TIL I'M BLUE (PAMA)
ERNEST VAN TREOSE AND THE MCDANIEL MARY STREET BAND: POPCORN PUSH PUSH (RCA)
FABULOUS THREE: ANSWER ME SOFTLY (PSYCHO)
MANUEL B HOLCOMB AND HIS BAND: KICK OUT (DIAMOND JIM)
THE VOLCANOS: MOVING & GROVING (HARTHON)
TOWANDA BARNES: IF I'M GUILTY (GROOVY)
NELSON CALLOWAY: FUNKY HORNS (VANGEE)
SPANKY WILSON: SUNSHINE OF YOUR LOVE (MOTHERS)
CHET IVEY: GET DOWN WITH THE GEATER (FRETONE)

SOFT TOUCH: PLENTY OF ACTION (CENTURY)
BILLY MARTIN: FUNKY FEELIN (TRANS WORLD)
JOYCE WILLIAMS: THE FIRST THING I DO IN THE MORNING (NICKEL)

Vika raita (Al Hudson "I'm About Loving You") valitettavasti puuttuu, koska meitsin cd ei suostunut sitä soittamaan.
