Now You Want Me

A little something for the weekend! Massive Romanthony dub from 1993, I've been requested this repeatedly since I made a little remix/edit of it a few years back. This is the original version and it's more or less the best thing I've ever heard.

Country Trip Revisited

Last week I stumbled on an old mix by a hometown DJ hero, Pirkka. Semi-retired now, he was always one of the very few DJ's worth trainspotting each and every time and a direct source of inspiration to me and so many others.

The mix was first published on his seminal mix site Mixoftheweek.com and is a prime example of what he was known for: classy dance music old and new and regular, sometimes weekly one take, no edit mixes. Seven years later I had this on repeat for days and days and just had to share it here as well.

DJ Pirkka: Country Trip (2002)

Attitude: Love Me Tonight (RFC / Atlantic 12")
Chez Damier: ? (KMS 12")
Ron Allen: Whispers (Centrifuge 12")
Atmosfear: What Do We Do [Club Mix] (Elite 12")
G-Litter: Paiste [Mika Snickars edit] (Lifesaver 12")
Giorgio Moroder: Evolution (Casablanca LP)
Bjørn Torske: Hard Trafikk (Tellé 10")
Idjut Boys: Jazz Fook (U Star 12")
Roy Davis: Heart Attack (Power Music 12")
A Certain Ratio: Knife Slits Water (Soul Jazz LP)
Theo Parrish: You Forgot (Sound Signature 12")

Shout outs to everyone who came to Dance Right last night. I had a brief but very enjoyable time behind the decks.

During my set someone asked about the version of Peaches And Prunes I played. I couldn't recall the details there, but here it is, a really cool take on the timeless Ron Hardy classic. Enjoy.

Today, Tomorrow & Forever

Whenever I'm in NY I try to catch Mr Cee's Throwback At Noon if I only get the chance. Last nite I went as far as stream it all the way from here just because Twitter told me he was doing a killer house classics set. Indeed he was, murdering staples like Gypsy Woman and In A De Ghetto. Towards the end of the set he went into one of my all time faves, Break 4 Love.

The Castle Beat: Today, Tomorrow & Forever (1987)

Break 4 Love is produced by Vaughn Mason of Bounce Rock Skate Roll fame. I don't know what his relation to Castle Beat's Larry Joseph is, but what's clear is that Today, Tomorrow & Forever is the blueprint for Break 4 Love, minus the vocals. Probably he just jacked it. If anyone knows I'd like to know too.

Midsummer Party Mix #3

Damn I can't believe I made it and in time for the festivities too. Life's been hectic but here it is, the annual Midsummer Party Mix in all of it's 106 minute glory. Musically this is on the disco side of things and features a bunch of songs I've been playing A LOT over the last couple of months. No quickmixing this time (except for the short Imagination doubles), mostly I just let the songs ride all the way.

My Scandinavian brethren, have a good time next weekend and be safe. The rest of you can enjoy this all summer...

No You Girls Instrumental

I'm kind of feeling The Juan MacLean's whole style now. One Day is still going strong and most of the remixes have been real solid too. This is no exception. The acid line and the chopped up Apache go well together, but I can definitely live without the singer and therefore prefer the instrumental version.

Top Ten List - February 2009

I'm starting a kind of old fashioned monthly top ten list of current stuff I'm feeling and playing out, just so the blog won't be about classics alone. Cause I'm really not the stuck in the past kind of dude, even if some of the posts might give that impression lol. Here we go with this month's favorites, word to Masta Ace.

1. Shaggy: Bad Mon Don't Cry 320
2. Joker & Ginz: Purple City Myspace
3. Sebastian Tellier: Kilometer (A-Trak Remix) Fairtilizer
4. Beniton: Recession 320
5. Geeneus feat Katy B: As I Myspace

8. Moodymann: Freaky MF YouTube
9. Renaissance Man: Spraycan + Sharkslayer Remix Myspace
10. Zomby: Rumours & Revolutions YouTube

+1: Treasure Fingers: Come True Tonight Dub Mix 320
This has been floating a round for more than a year, but according to my man Nick at Fool's Gold it's not even finished yet. It's a banger nonetheless, here's hoping there will be an official release one day.

Basement Soul Vol 1

Time for some local DJ history. My old friend DJ Kelloggs just hit me with a mixtape rip from '97 and as I've been hearing about the mix for a long time of course I had to post it, too. It's called Basement Soul Volume 1 and it's by my man DJ Newhouse. The whole thing is a prime example of the kind of deep and soulful house sound he's always been known for. It's recorded in one take too, with no editing whatsoever. Respect.

Btw, this is a cassette rip and you can defintely hear it too. In a good way.
Enjoy!

Basement Soul Vol 1 - Side A (1997):

M'du

DJ Mujava's big hit Township Funk (btw, peep the Radioclit remix) has indeed inspired many of us to investigate the Kwaito house sound at least a little bit. No doubt there's incredible stuff to be discovered and and the scene goes back a long time too. M'du (or Mdu) seems to be one of the originators and this here jam is one of my personal favorites.

On And On Tracs

Jesse Saunders' On & On, claimed by many to be the first house track ever, came about when Saunders lost a megamix record he liked to use for his DJ sets. He already had production experience and a few electro / new wave releases under his belt, so he solved the problem by creating his own version of the megamix, over self-programmed drum machine beats. The result was On & On, released on Jes Say Records in early 1984.

Jesse Saunders: On And On Tracs - 119 / 5A / 1A / 4 A&B / I'm The DJ (1984)
I'm not going to post the full song, as it's widely available for purchase and you should do just that, but what we do have here is the set of five 3 minute 808 grooves he pressed on the b-side of the 12". They are the exact grooves from On & On and some of his earlier records like "I'm The DJ". The above link has all 15 minutes of them, ripped from the Jes Say 12" and edited together for continous play by yours truly, with cue points and everything for your convenience. Enjoy.

Btw, here's a good read on the origins of the record and Jesse's take on the mid-80's Chicago scene, taken from Jonathan Fleming's 1994 book What Kind Of House Party Is This?

This is a simple dj friendly edit I just made of one of KDJ's best tracks, and one I hardly ever hear played out. As far as I'm concerned Moodymann songs should be played at all occasions, but I feel the jacking beat and edits on this kind of make it especially relevant today.

House Classics 01

I've been promising my peoples a house mix for a year or so and here it is, finally. What was inititally supposed to be a simple party mix with random classics turned into a two part project in the process, mostly because of the vast amount of incredible tunes I just had to include.

What we have here now is 90 minutes worth of NJ & NY style classics all the way from the mid-80's to the early 90's. Part 02 with strictly Chicago jams is soon to follow. I know I, I know... I should have done them in reverse order, but I'm still waiting for a few choice 12"s (yes!) to round out the Chicago selection.

Enjoy...

Mika Snickars live in Stockholm, 2000

Now this ain't no blog hyperbole: what we have here is a live set by one of my all time favorite DJ's. From late 80's after hour rare groove parties to 90's house club residencies, from the battle dj circuit to underground disco nights, dude's done it all. And always with style and class beyond most others. This set is from the Stockholm release party for Strut's Paradise Garage comp and features an impeccable selection of disco classics and lesser known gems:

Mika Snickars live @ Sturecompagniet, Stockholm, 2000

1 Yr Anniversary...

So it seems my technical problems are behind, at least for the time being, and as promised here's a little something to celebrate my first full year in this here blog game as well as my 300th post.

I first got into house music about ten years ago. I was playing mostly hip hop at the time, but had been getting deeper into disco and stuff for a few years already. House was the logical extension of that and the fact that my city actually had a happening house scene back then didn't hurt either.
In the early 00's my interest vaned, I was busy with other stuff and the scene kind of changed as well. Over the last year and a half I've been getting back into the game, slowly but surely. I've bought stacks of records, mostly 80's and early 90's, but also revisited the songs that made a hip hop kid fall in love with house in the first place.
For your enjoyment, here's 10 late 90's jams that are still very near and dear to me...

Moodymann: Untitled (Don't Be Misled)

Kenny Dixon Jr: Don't You Want My Love (Pandemonium Version)

Deep Sensation: Somehow Someway

CZR: Chicago Southside

Deelat: Wet Indiez

Daniel Wang: Like Some Dream I Can't Stop Dreaming (Break Mix)

Roy Davis: Under The Sun

The System: You're In My System (Spanish Version)(Kerri Chandler Remix)

K Hand: Supernatural

BeBe Winans: Thank You (Masters At Work Remix)

I believe most of the artists above still make music and/or play out, please support their efforts whenever you have the chance.
Shout outs to DJ Pirkka & Helsinki House Underground who teached me everything I know about house, Lil Tony, Mika Snickars, 3rd Cowboy, Nenis, K2 & DJ Kaippa.

Btw, the house mix I've been promising my peoples for a year now will be out this spring, guaranteed.

Blind

The much hyped new single on DFA is finally out next week. People can't seem to stop talking about the Frankie Knuckles remix. It is really good, but I prefer the dub which supposedly is not going to be on the 12".

Hercules & Love Affair: Blind (Frankie Knuckles Dub)

Update: the dub will be on a 12" after all, on the so called Blind #2 that's out a week after the first one.

Osunlade My Reflection

Osunlade: My Reflection
Now this is no news to anyone staying on top of the deep house game, but I missed it as did many others. And it's definitely good enough to deserve a little crossover attention as well. The guitar line is extra catchy, if you don't believe me just ask Lil Mama, T-Pain & Chris Brown.

Classic Time #33

Strobelite Honey (Maybe We Did Mix / the video version) 1992
Strobelite Honey (Yes We Did Mix / remixed by David Morales) 1992

Ever since Choice Is Yours was played to death ten years ago Strobelite Honey has been the one Black Sheep joint to pull out, for me at least. I always liked a good uptempo party rap jam and back then there definitely wasn't too many of those.
The video version was usually my choice, but occasionally I've gone for the house version as well.
There's another Morales house remix on a different 12", I haven't seen my copy for a minute though. If anyone has a quality rip of the 8 minute "Def Mix" please hook me up.

Wreck

I've been a Romanthony fan since I found about dude in the late 90's. Even if you never realized it you've been singing along to him as well. I wrote briefly about one of his finest releases last year and another big personal fave is this track called Wreck from his R. Hide In Plain Site album. I always hoped they would've put it on a 12" but as far as I know that never happened.
Romanthony: Wreck (2000)

BONUS: Here's the "hit" single from the album in it's long single version. I think I actually like this even better today than back when it came out...

Spread Love 1999

2 late-90's house gems making good use of Al Hudson's disco classic (see here). Black Sun's straight cover was more of a hit back then, but Russell definitely sounds fresher today.

Classic Time #26

A timeless classic and also one of the first house records I really got into, back in the mid-90's when I was still a little hip hop dude.
