RIP Mr Magic

I don't really know what's going here. DJ's dying left and right. Mr Magic was a hero to me as he was to everyone who's ever done a radio mixshow. Of course you couldn't hear WBLS here overseas, but I did literally grow up on his Profile compilations.

Here's a great set from 1988 I downloaded from Old School Hip Hop Tapes some time ago. They used to have lots, but the Zshare links are all dead now. This is the only one on Divshare and still up, go get it.

Country Trip Revisited

Last week I stumbled on an old mix by a hometown DJ hero, Pirkka. Semi-retired now, he was always one of the very few DJ's worth trainspotting each and every time and a direct source of inspiration to me and so many others.

The mix was first published on his seminal mix site Mixoftheweek.com and is a prime example of what he was known for: classy dance music old and new and regular, sometimes weekly one take, no edit mixes. Seven years later I had this on repeat for days and days and just had to share it here as well.

Midsummer Party Mix #3

Damn I can't believe I made it and in time for the festivities too. Life's been hectic but here it is, the annual Midsummer Party Mix in all of it's 106 minute glory. Musically this is on the disco side of things and features a bunch of songs I've been playing A LOT over the last couple of months. No quickmixing this time (except for the short Imagination doubles), mostly I just let the songs ride all the way.

Now I was planning to post an ancient mix I did back in 1996, but couldn't get the tape ripped yet so I decided to post my late 80's rap mix from 2006 instead. The CD's are gone anyway. "I was digitizing this 12 inch of this old Imagination song and just started djing while I was recording for about 38 minutes. The thing that always surprises me about vinyl is I can lock in two records in about 3 seconds, go make myself a frozen pizza, eat it, take a shit and come back 6 minutes later and they will still be perfectly in synch. Big difference from Serato (especially when you're djing in a club and the bass is making your green circles all fuzzy). I've been really struggling with the gayness of Serato recently and although I have no plans to stop using it, djing with records every once in a while is good therapy! So these are just old records I've had for years and years and still never get sick of hearing. Enjoy!"

I thought I had uploaded most of my older mixes last year already, including this here, until it was requested multiple times over the last month or two.
Like Volume 1 (now re-upped), this one deals with smooth 1970's soul exclusively and titles that used to be common here particularly. The mix starts off slow jam style, but builds in tempo towards the end. I gotta say I was pleasantly surprised at how fresh the whole thing still sounded- I guess you can't really go wrong with timeless jams like these.

Basement Soul Vol 1

Time for some local DJ history. My old friend DJ Kelloggs just hit me with a mixtape rip from '97 and as I've been hearing about the mix for a long time of course I had to post it, too. It's called Basement Soul Volume 1 and it's by my man DJ Newhouse. The whole thing is a prime example of the kind of deep and soulful house sound he's always been known for. It's recorded in one take too, with no editing whatsoever. Respect.

Btw, this is a cassette rip and you can defintely hear it too. In a good way.

J-Live Promo Mix from 1997

Back in 1997 me and my man DJ Didier promoted a J-Live show here in Helsinki. I think dude was the first international artist we had, too. Long story short, the whole thing was a mess and almost never happened, but luckily everything worked out in the end.

To promote the night I did this 30 minute mix that included more or less everything dude had relesed at the time (Braggin Writes, Longevity, Can I Get It, Sheisty etc), as well as a couple tracks by Yeshua of Siah & Yeshua DaPoed who was opening for him. I had kinda forgotten about it, but stumbled on the MD while going through some old recordings the other day. I'm slightly surprised to say that it's actually a cool little peek into the relatively short period of time when the indie rap thing was really popping off.

House Classics 01

I've been promising my peoples a house mix for a year or so and here it is, finally. What was inititally supposed to be a simple party mix with random classics turned into a two part project in the process, mostly because of the vast amount of incredible tunes I just had to include.


What we have here now is 90 minutes worth of NJ & NY style classics all the way from the mid-80's to the early 90's. Part 02 with strictly Chicago jams is soon to follow. I know I, I know... I should have done them in reverse order, but I'm still waiting for a few choice 12"s (yes!) to round out the Chicago selection.

What we have here is a rap mix I did back in 1997, kind of a sequel to Hip Hop Is Living from the year before. American Nights

My man Joshua Dunn (aka Fox 50) from Detroit, whom I haden't heard from in a year or so, just emailed me about three new mixes up on his Podomatic page. His old mixes used to be road trip staples for me and turned out the American Nights are just as good or even better. The selection is a classy blend of early 80's electro-funk, electro-pop and boogie, with only a handful of songs I was familiar with.
