Get Thy Bearings

Classic from back in the day. I hadn't heard this in a looooong while until I ran into the album again just a couple of days ago. This will forever remind me of Biz Markie and Finsta Bundy (Tape Kingz Records FTW).

Sommartid

I'll be busy with festival business for the next week and doubt I'll be able to post much of anything. Before I go I'll leave you with one of this summer's definitive records over here in Helsinki, as promised last week...
Sommartid (1981)
Uggla's Swedish-sung disco pop jam was revived by Stockholm legend Mika Snickars a few summers back and finally arrived upon these shores this year... and now you can't escape it. It's pretty damn good still, definitely worth grabbing even for the non-Swedish speakers. Enjoy.
Labels: electronic, pop, Sweden

Robert Palmer
So I'm in Tokyo and have a few off days between deejaying obligations. It's the rainy season so I believe I'll be staying in my hotel room a lot, working and possibly even blogging. Let's see.
I just got back from Hiyoko Records in Shimokitazawa and their Compass Point section sent me on a crazy Robert Palmer YT spree. Dude had a knack for choosing songs to cover. Wikipedia has a cool story on how his version of You're In My System came about:
""You Are In My System" was an example of Palmer's passion for R&B covers. He jammed the song onto the Pride album after the other tracks were finished. Hearing the track in a Paris club, Palmer rushed back to his Bahamas hometown, where the reconvened band (co-composer David Frank of The System included) put together the number."
Make sure to also check his version of Cherrelle's I Didn't Mean To Turn You On, a big hit in the early days of MTV.

No You Girls Instrumental
I'm kind of feeling The Juan MacLean's whole style now. One Day is still going strong and most of the remixes have been real solid too. This is no exception. The acid line and the chopped up Apache go well together, but I can definitely live without the singer and therefore prefer the instrumental version.

Holy Ghost Loves Paris Remixomania
Phoenix: Lisztomania (Holy Ghost! Loves Paris Remixomania)Holy Ghost! delivers once again but I could definitely use a dub version as well. Their new single 'I Will Come Back" will be out on DFA next month, backed with DJ Mehdi and Classixx remixes. If there's a copy floating around that I've missed please send me.
Btw, make sure to grab their solid edit of Hugh Masakela's classic Don't Go Lose It as well.

Why?

Why? (Instrumental)(1982)
A few of my friends have called me crazy for preferring the instrumental version on this. Whatever, I always thought it's Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers who really steal the show here. Either way, it's a classic jam, no doubt about that.

You Showed Me

"The 1989 debut album by hip-hop combo De La Soul featured an uncredited sample from the Turtles (specifically, the intro to "You Showed Me"(1968)), in the song "Transmitting Live from Mars". Kaylan and Volman sued, winning a large settlement, setting a legal precedent, and causing the music industry to begin carefully crediting (and paying royalties for) sampled works on future rap and other recordings. As they explained, "We don't hate sampling; we like sampling. If we don't get credit, we sue, and all that stuff (a share of the royalties, plus punitive damages) comes back to us!""

Remix, Remake, Remodel
Now here's a cool little 80's jam, one I never ever heard anyone play out. Which is a shame as the lyrics couldn't be more on point in 2007, take a listen and you'll know what I mean. I don't know much about dude but I do know he played keyboards in UK outfit Shakatak and later worked with Gary Numan on a bunch of records.
Bill Sharpe: Remix, Remake, Remodel (1985)
Btw, just in case you're in need of any more DJ tips: you might want to try this after/before whatever Chromeo record you currently prefer...

Sade: By Your Side Neptunes Remix
This was everywhere a few years back, I can't believe I never saw the video until now. Such a great remix of such a great song.
If you love Sade like I do you'll find the 2001 live version entertaining as well. I wish I'll get the chance to see her onstage one day.

More dancehall remixes
Two somewhat different dancehall remixes here: Budy Bye over a slew of early 90's East Coast rap hits and Hyperventilating over a timeless pop classic. Both work in their own way... Enjoy!
Johnny Osbourne: Budy Bye (Kenny Dope Super Dub Remix)
T.O.K and Tami Chynn: Hyper Monday (Rebel Remix)
EDIT: The Hyper Monday rip is fucked, I'll re-rip soon.

New wave covers

New wave covers of soul classics.. you gotta love em! The Flying Lizards and The Slits are old faves, but the Paul Haig and Ronny versions I only found out about recently. This post was inspired by last nights corporate gig where "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" just killed it.
The Slits: I Heard It Through The Grapevine
The Flying Lizards: Move On Up
Paul Haig: Running Away
Ronny: If You Want Me To Stay
