RIP Mr Magic

I don't really know what's going here. DJ's dying left and right. Mr Magic was a hero to me as he was to everyone who's ever done a radio mixshow. Of course you couldn't hear WBLS here overseas, but I did literally grow up on his Profile compilations.

Here's a great set from 1988 I downloaded from Old School Hip Hop Tapes some time ago. They used to have lots, but the Zshare links are all dead now. This is the only one on Divshare and still up, go get it.

Mr. Magic's Rap Attack / WBLS / 12-23-88

Download here.

Another blog with just incredible WHBI and WBLS posts is Will C. Make sure to check at least this, this and this.

Before I go I'll embed one of his snippets from Mr Magic's Disco Showcase radio show, all the way back in 1981. This is guaranteed to blow your mind if you know your hip hop history at all.

Rest In Peace Mr Magic.

Check Out The Radio

Spectrum City: Check Out The Radio (1984)
I always found the first P.E. 12" on Vanguard a fascinating record, even if it's not quite on the same genius level as some of their famous later works. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, you can read up here.

Some more obscure 90's 12"s

Kovalevy @ Redrum is the number one hip hop night in the city and this Friday it's once again time for the yearly throwback special. Nuff classics will be played for sure, but I'm thinking I need to get me an early night slot to play some legendary underground shit most people are definitely not up on... something like:
Shades Of Brooklyn: Change (1996)
Kaotic Style: Represent (1994)
Black Reign: Dirty (1995)

From this month on I'll also be serving as one of the resident DJ's so you will be seeing more on the night here as well.

And back to the classics for a brief second: If you haven't yet checked the latest edition of The Rub's History Of Hip Hop over at Brooklyn Radio you should do so whenever you get the chance. This time it's all about the year 1990, when I first saw the tracklisting I damn near started crying.
