Random 70's Jams For The Holidays

Yeah you guessed it, I've been ripping albums again. Here's a few choice cuts.

Time Is Passing (1977)
Dedicated to all those who were heavy into the School Of Hard Knocks like I was

Wandering (1976)
Classic Jamaican soul sounds recorded in Miami, produced by the legendary King Sporty who went on to produce 80's electronic masterpieces Haven't Been Funked Enough and Get Down among other things

Mother Earth (1974)
Beautiful mellow song from the album best known for Jay-Z's Friend Or Foe loop

Flower Dance (1976)
Tasty French library jam that was used repeatedly by Swedish producers back in the late 90's

Give It Up (1975)
Bangin' cover of the Kool & The Gang classic, only ever released in Sweden (and bootlegged in the UK later)

Evolution (1974)
Just a dope funk song with unintentionally funny lyrics

Long As We're Together

Ok let me get back in this here music blogging game. I'll start with a mellow fave that always makes me smile, also one I never ever heard anyone else play. Produced by her brother Ronnie, this just might be the best song she ever sung.

Summery Summer Jams

The summer's here and we got another 100 posts full, totaling at 700 already. Once again, here's 10 essential mellow jams to celebrate the occasion.

Summer Madness Live (1976)
Worth it for the intro alone.

Charisma (1981)
"What's the deal huh? Let's keep it real huh?"

Vykkii (1976)
Play this at 45.

In All My Wildest Dreams (1978)
So obvious, so good.

Valdez In The Country (1973)
Donny was a genius.

Star Borne (1974)
Mizell Bros still rule.

Hollywood Dreaming (1979)
Personal fave from back in the day.

Don't Stop Loving Me Now (1978)
"Word Iz Life." They made so many great songs.

Movin In The Right Direction (1981)
I can't believe they reissued those other songs by him but not this.

New-Found Truths (1972)
The definition of smooth.

Riding High

It's 2:30am here, after watching Barca embarrass Chelsea 3 hours ago I went on a lengthy house wav buying spree. I should really be asleep by now, instead I sit here blasting age old classics like this.

Classic Time #40

Breakwater: No Limit (12" Mix)(1978)
I always loved the jam and it's classy production, but never noticed the writers are Grey & Hanks of RCA Disco fame, until just now. Weird, man, weird. Anyways... the 12" mix of this is what you wanna have as it's longer and features a cool extension of the breakdown in the middle.
My ol' head Philly peoples (Toney B & Cosmo what's up!!) always talk about the flipside (Do It Til The Fluid Gets Hot ) being a local classic, but I never got the chance to hear it out in a club there. One day man, one day.
The band is also responsible for this sweet groove and this famous Daft Punk sample, among other things.

Just The Way You Like It

I've been trying to figure out what the ultimate S.O.S. Band jam is. Has to be from the Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis era, that's for sure. On some other day I might go for High Hopes, Borrowed Love, The Finest or even the omnipresent Just Be Good To Me, but today...

Just The Way You Like It (Long Version)(1984)
Btw, check the incredible video as well.

BONUS:
The slow jam masterpiece from the same album. Essential.

I Want U

I always liked Waajeed's tribute to Marvin's timeless I Want You, especially the faster second part. And that's saying a lot as I can't stand most Motown remixes out there.

As requested... Suomi Soul #2 from 2006

DJ Anonymous: Suomi Soul#2 (2006)
alternative Megaupload link
I thought I had uploaded most of my older mixes last year already, including this here, until it was requested multiple times over the last month or two.
Like Volume 1 (now re-upped), this one deals with smooth 1970's soul exclusively and titles that used to be common here particularly. The mix starts off slow jam style, but builds in tempo towards the end. I gotta say I was pleasantly surprised at how fresh the whole thing still sounded- I guess you can't really go wrong with timeless jams like these.

Black Moses Radio Special

Isaac Hayes: Open End Radio Special (1972)
So I found this buried in the shelves today and was cursing myself for forgetting about it when he died. Would have been perfect for the radio show. Oh well. Anyway, here it is for you to enjoy and even use. You'll hear Isaac chatting about the then brand new Black Moses album but also about fashion, about being a sex symbol, about his haircut and about RAPPING. Some memorable lines there. Enjoy...
Btw, the Curtis Mayfield Rapping radio show is now re-upped, for those who missed it on Zshare.

Sweet Stuff

As you can see I've been on a little LP ripping spree lately. This one is for my Dilla fans and basically everyone who enjoys a dope little groove with some sensuous vocals.
Sylvia: Sweet Stuff (1976)

BONUS:
One of the writers of Sweet Stuff, Harry Ray of The Moments (and later Ray, Goodman & Brown) recycled the rhythm track on one of his own songs some 6 years later. Definitely not bad either.

Almost There

We're Almost There DJ Spinna Remix (2001)

I've said it before and I'll say it again. This is most likely my favorite DJ Spinna production ever. I guess part of the charm is the fact that I find remixes of such classics almost always a mere waste of time. This was originally only released in Japan (it was swiftly bootlegged in the UK though) and if I'm not mistaken that is the case to this day.

Sexy Mama

I've loved this little jammy forever, but just today discovered the extra long 9 minute version. I especially like how it fades out at 6:30, just to come back for another 2 minutes like it ain't no thing.

The I Got A Love Routine

The Ambassadors: Ain't Got The Love Of One Girl (1969)

Mel & Tim: Groovy Situation (1970)

A long time ago I used to have this little routine where I'd play these two tunes back to back, sometimes going back and forth from one to the other. It was about the samples of course, but I was also always amazed at what incredible songs they both were. And they kept people dancing too.

Rapping

Curtis Mayfield: Rapping - Special Promotional Radio Show (1972)
Link updated. Older Zshares seem to all have died.

"If I go back 15 years, I didn't even want to do this. I really wanted to be a scientist when I was young... until I found out that you had to be fairly good in mathematics and that was my worst subject. I wished to be an artsit until I found out that you didn't really get into the big money until you were 200 years gone".

The Rapping album was sent to select radio stations back in 1972. It contains a complete 25 minute radio show where Curtis talks about the then current Superfly album, his earlier hits and his career. I always found it fascinating listening. I even played it on my radio show once, people seemed to appreciate it too.

Money's Too Tight (To Mention)

Valentine Brothers: Money's Too Tight (To Mention) (1982)(Quick Edit)

This little edit I just did was inspired by all of the recent recession talk (I picked up The Economist yesterday- clearly a mistake), the fact that some people still think Simply Red wrote this themselves and knowing most other DJ's don't approve of the original version's borderline cheesy horn intro. Enjoy.
