Canadian Rapps

Saukrates: Rollin Remix feat Masta Ace & OC (1997)

I've been reminiscing about old Canadian undergound rap faves on this trip a lot. Of course I have almost none here with me now, but that's what YouTube's for. Shout outs to Neoteric, Skratch Bastid, Smalltown Pete, The Gaff and Jason Palma @ Play De Record.

Remain Anonymous

Ras Kass: Remain Anonymous (1994)
You best believe this was my shit back then, too bad it hasn't aged as well as some indie rap hits from the era. It's still entertaining nonetheless. I didn't follow his career much after this, but always felt he was a pretty good rapper.

Fudge Pudge

I feel like I'm getting sick, I got a 6am flight to Moscow and for whatever reason this is exactly what I felt like posting right now... I dunno, it's still good and you never ever ever hear it anywhere nowadays, so enjoy.

Lubrication

It seems like many of us who grew up with mid-90's rap still have a place in our hearts for Kwest The Madd Ladd's very entertaining 101 Things. I always thought dude's debut single from the year before is just as good.

Btw, here's an interesting read about what happened with Kwest's deal at Rick Rubin's Def American, courtesy of Ego Trip magazine (Mao what's up???) and via Pressrewind.

Mos Def, Jay, Prince & Stevie / Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin & Biggie

Damn, I used to play this a lot at one point. Now it's been a while and it's sounding fresh as ever again.

Btw, make sure to check the new jam and the somewhat bangerific Swizz Beats remix if you haven't yet.

Also, a request: if anyone has a high bitrate version of the ancient unreleased ATCQ jam Mr Incognito I'd really appreciate it. My old bootleg 12"'s too damn beat up to rip.

X-Amount Of Verses, With or Without Curses

Mytee G Poetic: Com'n Wit Nuff Ruffness (1995)
A killer track from the first wave of mid-90's indies. Dude's flow is dope and the production is tight as well. The flipside is just as good and can still be grabbed here.

J-Live Promo Mix from 1997

Back in 1997 me and my man DJ Didier promoted a J-Live show here in Helsinki. I think dude was the first international artist we had, too. Long story short, the whole thing was a mess and almost never happened, but luckily everything worked out in the end.

To promote the night I did this 30 minute mix that included more or less everything dude had relesed at the time (Braggin Writes, Longevity, Can I Get It, Sheisty etc), as well as a couple tracks by Yeshua of Siah & Yeshua DaPoed who was opening for him. I had kinda forgotten about it, but stumbled on the MD while going through some old recordings the other day. I'm slightly surprised to say that it's actually a cool little peek into the relatively short period of time when the indie rap thing was really popping off.

Enjoy...

Erule B-sides

Some of you might be old enough to remember Erule's 1994 underground classic "Listen Up". The L.A. rapper disappered after that, to return a few years later with a single called "Worldwide Domination" that got like zero distribution. The b-side was hot though, as had been the case with "Listen Up". I won't say "Synopsis" is better than "Listen Up", but I will say "Nik Luv" is definitely better than "Worldwide Domination", up there with the first 12".
Erule: Synopsis (1994)
Erule: Nik Luv (1998)
BTW, there must be something wrong with the innernet, I couldn't find a proper photo of dude to go with this post...
UPDATE: I just got a mail from an old friend & local MC/DJ legend Iwere who sent the photo above, scanned from Rap Pages' December 1994 L.A. underground issue... Thanks again!

More mid 90's heat

Listening to the old mix I posted before the weekend inspired me to transfer some 12"s from the era and these were the first three in line. Mytee G Poetic and Dutchmin are top notch indie 12"s from 1995, the Smif N Wessun track appeared on a bootleg whitelabel around 1996 or so. I don't think it was ever officially released. The Beatminerz produced it and I remember reading an Evil Dee interview back then where he said only 3 people had access to the song and it still leaked. He sounded kinda bitter about it.

Smif N Wessun: Nothing Move But The Money
Dutchmin: Get Your Swerve On
